Probenecid-Colchicine Information:
Probenecid and colchicine is a combination of medicines that both work to reduce the presence of uric acid in the body. When uric acid builds, it can lead to an arthritic condition called gout that causes pain and discomfort. Though this medicine cannot stop a gout attack or cure gout directly, it can help patients prone to gout prevent their next attack.
Take tablets as directed by your doctor with or without food. If the medicine upsets your stomach, you may take it with food or milk. In more severe cases, you can use an antacid to counteract stomach pain. This medicine becomes more effective over time. Continue to use the medicine as directed, even if you do not notice an immediate improvement.
Before taking probenecid and colchicine, tell your doctor if:
- You are receiving chemotherapy or radiation
- You have liver disease
- You have a blood disease
- You have heart disease
- You have kidney disease or a history of kidney stones
- You drink large amounts of alcohol
- You have stomach problems
When using probenecid and colchicine medicine, you may experience common side effects such as mild nausea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, loss of hair, or flushing. Talk to a physician if you begin to experience painful urination, blood in the urine, little or no urination, severe pain in the side or lower back, fever, severe weakness, bruising, bleeding, severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, mood changes, or seizures (convulsions).
Take your missed dose as soon as you remember to do so. Skip the dose that you missed if it’s almost time for you to take the next dose. Afterward, return to your regular dosing schedule. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.
Place this drug in an area that stays at room temperature all day. Keep it away from moisture and excessive heat. Do not allow pets or children near this medicine.
You may begin to experience some of the side effects listed as severe. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or get to an emergency room immediately.
Warnings
Drinking alcohol may raise uric acid levels in the blood above the level for which this medication is used for control. It may also weaken your stomach and cause uncomfortable or undesirable side effects. Do not take this medication to attempt to cure gout or stop a gout attack.
