Proventil HFA Information:

What is Proventil HFA?

Proventil HFA is an inhaled, relatively selective beta2-andrenergic (sympathomimetic, or beta agonist) bronchodilator delivered by a pressurized, metered-dose aerosol inhaler. It is usually prescribed to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasms or BOPD/asthmatic symptoms, as well as to treat episodic, acute bronchospasms. Proventil HFA opens and relaxes airways to the lungs, easing breathing and treating coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing.

How do I take Proventil HFA?

Always follow the specific instructions from your doctor or pharmacist, and review any enclosed pamphlets with medication information. Do not take it more often or in higher doses than prescribed. Each actuation (or inhalation or puff) usually contains 108 mcg albuterol sulfate via mouthpiece and an additional 120 mcg from the valve, and each inhaler contains 200 actuations. Please note: Even if there is more medication in your inhaler, do not use it after 200 actuations, as the amount of medication cannot be guaranteed.

Before taking, shake the inhaler well. For bronchospasm prevention, the dosing is often 2 actuations about 15 to 30 minutes prior to exercising. For other treatment and prevention, Proventil HFA may be prescribed as little as 1 actuation every 4 hours. However, in many cases it will likely be 2 actuations every 4 to 6 hours. Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding your dose.

Before taking Proventil HFA, tell your doctor if:

  • You have had an allergic reaction to other sympathomimetic bronchodialators in the past.
  • You have any other allergies, medicinal or otherwise, as inactive ingredients may trigger a serious reaction.
  • You have a history of or are currently experiencing heart problems (e.g., angina, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat) or seizures.
  • You have a history of or currently experience kidney problems or diabetes, an overactive thyroid, or pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor).
  • You are currently taking or have taken the following in the past 14 days: MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, beta blockers, epinephrine, other air passage relaxers, or any other prescription or non-prescription medication, vitamins or supplements.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • You've recently had surgery, or plan to have surgery; also, if planning surgery while taking Proventil HFA, be sure to notify your surgeon that you are on this medication.

What are the possible side effects of taking Proventil HFA?

The following are symptoms of an allergic reaction to this medication: hives, increased difficulty breathing, swelling in the lips tongue or throat. If you experience any of the side effects, discontinue Proventil HFA and contact your doctor immediately. Other severe side effects that indicate you should contact your doctor immediately without discontinuation include but are not limited to: unusual bronchospasms or chest tightness (especially when starting new inhalers); uneven or fast, pounding heartbeats; tremors or muscle weakness (especially in limbs); increased urination; dangerously high blood pressure; anxiety, confusion or nervousness; seizures; swelling in the hands, lower legs, ankles, or feet.

More common side effects include: dizziness, headache, insomnia, sinus inflammation, hoarseness or sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea.

What if I forget to take a dose of Proventil HFA?

When on a regimented dosing schedule, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it as long as it is not almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue your normal dosing schedule. Never double your doses of Proventil HFA.

How do I store Proventil HFA?

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. If prescribed to a child, always supervise the child taking Proventil HFA, otherwise keep out of reach of children. Contents are under pressure and should never be punctured, exposed to direct heat, or incinerated (even for disposal) as the inhaler canister may explode. This medication is usually expired after 2 months, so consult the medication pamphlet or talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how long your medication is good for. Do not take expired contents as the amount of medication cannot be guaranteed.

What happens if I overdose on Proventil HFA?

An overdose of albuterol medications can be fatal, so contact your local poison control center or emergency services immediately. Symptoms may include: excessive tiredness or lack of energy, uncontrollable shaking in part of the body, seizures, suddenly irregular and/or fast heartbeat, dry mouth, dizziness and nausea, chest pain and heaviness or pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, fainting.

Warnings

Always prime your inhaler before you use it for the first time, or if you have not used it for the past two weeks. Do not float the inhaler in water to test for remaining medication, and do not use any remaining medication after you have used the total number of doses the inhaler is intended to deliver. Do not use near flames or direct heat sources, as it may explode.

If you become pregnant while taking this medication, do stop taking your medication, but call your doctor immediately.

Remember, Proventil HFA is used to treat the symptoms of asthma or other breathing difficulties, and it is NOT a cure.

You should never stop taking your medication without your doctor's instruction unless you suspect you are having an allergic reaction to the medication. If you stop taking Proventil HFA as prescribed, it may destabilize your asthma etc. Similarly, you should never take more than prescribed. If you feel that your current dose is not alleviating your symptoms, or that your symptoms are becoming worse, contact your doctor immediately.
