Rectiv Information:
What is Rectiv?
Rectiv is the brand name for a topical nitroglycerin ointment, a colorectal agent that is applied to treat the moderate to severe pain caused by anal fissures (a tearing of the rectal lining). The medication in Rectiv is a vasodilator, widening blood vessels and relaxing muscles to improve blood flow and reduce pressure. It may also be used for other purposes at the discretion of a doctor.
How do I take Rectiv?
Rectiv is usually applied intra-anally once every twelve hours for up to three weeks, in 1.5mg dosages (approximately one inch). To apply, place a protective cover over the finger (surgical glove, or a plastic wrap or cot) and squeeze one-inch of the ointment onto the finger, using the dosing indicator on the box as a measuring guide. Apply the medication to the inside of the anal canal. If pain prevents this, the ointment can be applied to the exterior. Wash hands thoroughly after use.
Before taking Rectiv, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to nitrates, glycerin, or any of the ingredients in Rectiv
- You are allergic to nitroglycerin
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have recently taken, riociguat, PDE-5 inhibitors, NSAIDS, or beta-blockers
- You are taking calcium channel blockers, or ergot-type medications
- You are taking medications for hypertension, low blood pressure, arrhythmia, or heart disease
- You have anemia, are dehydrated, migraines, or recurrent headaches
- You have, or have had heart disease, heart failure, a heart attack, or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
What are the possible side effects of using Rectiv?
Some patients have reported side effects after using the Rectiv drug. Less severe symptoms include dizziness, flushing, lightheadedness, or skin irritation at the site of application. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash or hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue), fainting, slow heartbeat, or chest pain.
What if I forget to take a dose of Rectiv?
If you forget to apply a scheduled dose of Rectiv, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next application, skip the one missed and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not apply more than the recommended dosage to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Rectiv?
Keep the Rectiv drug tightly sealed in its tube, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the ointment to freeze or melt. Dispose of any unused or expired quantities according to the directives of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Rectiv?
In the event of an overdose, misapplication, or accidental ingestion of Rectiv, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. However, if the patient has collapsed, stopped breathing, lost consciousness, or is exhibiting any unusual symptoms, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Do not ingest Rectiv. This medication is not for vaginal, oral, or ophthalmic use. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Rectiv may make you dizzy; do not drive, operate heavy equipment or machinery, or use power tools until the effects of this medication are known. Drinking alcohol while on this prescription may exacerbate side effects. Rectiv may cause headaches.
Brand Names
Rectiv is the brand name for a particular concentration and formulation of nitroglycerin ointment; however, a similar product is available under the brand name Nitro-Bid Ointment, but this formulation is used to treat angina. Do not substitute one for the other without the consent of your doctor. To help keep the Rectiv cost under control (a single tube can cost almost $500), use the Rectiv coupon on the HelpRx site. It can reduce the retail price of Rectiv by as much as 75% when presented at the pharmacy of your choice.
