Retin-A Information:

Retin-A is a retinoid and the carboxylic acid form of vitamin A. It is most often prescribed to treat acne vulgaris, but may also be used to treat aging skin. It works by acting on the RAR (retinoid acid) receptors that modify gene expression, protein synthesis, and epithelial cell growth. It increases cell generation and turnover to eliminate acne and help reduce wrinkles from photoaging. It may also stimulate collagen production. Retin-A is a topical cream or gel that comes in several strengths. Retin-A gel comes in strengths of .025% or .01%, while Retin-A cream comes in strengths of 0.1%, .05% and .025%. Your doctor or dermatologist will prescribe the appropriate strength for your condition and your skin type.

How do I use Retin-A?

Print one of our Retin-A coupons to get up to 84% off before buying this medication in your pharmacy. Retin-A gel or cream can be applied nightly or every two or three days. This depends on the sensitivity of your skin, and your doctor will tell you what to do. Before applying Retin-A, be sure to wash your face or the affected area with a mild soap and let it dry completely. Lightly cover the affected area with approximately a pea sized portion of Retin-A cream or gel.  Be careful not to get this medication near your eyes, nostrils or mouth. Also be careful to avoid harsh skin products while using this medication. Things like alcohol and benzoyl peroxide can exacerbate the side effects of Retin-A. Always apply this medication before bed and not before going out into the sunlight. It could take as many as six weeks of treatment with Retin-A before you see improvement.

Before using Retin-A, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or you are breastfeeding.
  • You have sensitive skin.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Retin-A gel or cream.
  • You have other skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
  • You are using other skincare products or medications to treat your acne.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications or vitamins, especially antibiotics.

What are the possible side effects of using Retin-A?

Side effects from using Retin-A topical cream or gel include redness or irritation on the affected area, scaly or peeling skin, sensitivity to sunlight, a change in skin color, and increased acne breakouts. If your acne does not improve after six weeks of treatment, or your skin swells or becomes blistered, tell your doctor or dermatologist.

What if I forget to use a dose of Retin-A?

If you are using Retin-A every day, you should skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. If you are using Retin-A every other day or less, you can apply the missed dose on the evening that you remember. Do not apply Retin-A cream or gel more than once every 24 hours.

How do I store Retin-A?

Store Retin-A in a cool, dry place below 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow your medication to freeze and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Retin-A?

An overdose on Retin-A is not likely. Excessive use will result in exaggerated side effects. If you think you are using too much Retin-A, tell your dermatologist or doctor. If Retin-A cream or gel is accidentally ingested, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Your skin will become extra sensitive to sunlight while you are using Retin-A. Be sure to use sunscreen and wear sunglasses whenever you go out in the sun.
