Rilutek Information:

What is Rilutek?

Rilutek is the drug riluzole, a glutamate antagonist prescribed to help slow down and treat the symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease). It works by decreasing levels of the amino acid glutamate in the body to limit nerve cell damage.

How do I take Rilutek?

Rilutek is administered in tablet form and taken orally, twice a day at twelve hour intervals with water, on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hour after meals). However, the amount taken and frequency of dosage will be determined by your physician. Limit caffeine intake while taking Rilutek. It should be taken at the same time every day. Follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription and do not take more or less than the prescribed amount. Do not crush, chew, or grind and inhale this medication. Rilutek helps slow down and control the symptoms of ALS, but it is not a cure. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without first consulting your doctor.

Before taking Rilutek, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to riluzole or any of the ingredients in the Rilutek drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You consume caffeine
  • You are taking theophylline, rifampin, omeprazole, ciprofloxacin, or amitriptyline
  • You have, or have had, anemia or other blood disorders
  • You have, or have had, kidney or liver disease

What are the possible side effects of taking Rilutek?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Rilutek. Less severe symptoms include an upset stomach, tiredness, stomach pain, muscle aches or weakness, appetite loss, headache, dizziness, and diarrhea. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for Rilutek patient assistance. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), or depression.

What if I forget to take a dose of Rilutek?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Rilutek, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the number of pills taken or change the regimen to make up for the one missed.

How do I store Rilutek?

Keep Rilutek tablets tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired pills according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Rilutek?

If an overdose of Rilutek is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Rilutek patient assistance.
