What is Ritalin La?

Ritalin La is a brand name of the drug methylphenidate and is prescribed, along with other forms of treatment, to help control the symptoms Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is a stimulant of the central nervous system, affecting certain chemicals of the brain control impulsivity and hyperactivity. The long-acting formula releases a dose of the medication immediately, while the remainder is gradually released over the next twenty-four hours. This drug may also be prescribed to help treat narcolepsy.

How do I take Ritalin La?

Ritalin La is a long-acting ADHD medication, dispensed in capsule form and taken in the morning; it can be taken with or without food. Do not chew, crush, break, or split the capsule. If you are having difficulties swallowing the capsule, speak with your doctor about an alternative method of ingestion. Do not stop taking this medication without a doctor’s permission.

Before taking Ritalin La, tell your doctor if:

What are the possible side effects of taking Ritalin La?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking Ritalin La. Less severe side effects include changes in sexual desire, diarrhea, sleep difficulties, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, heartburn, appetite changes, muscle tightness, nausea, restlessness, stomach pain, tremors, vomiting, or numb, burning, or tingling hands or feet. If any of these conditions persist worsen contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include arrhythmia, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, changes in speech patterns, fainting, weakness or numbing of the limbs, seizures, vision problems, agitation, paranoia, aural or visual hallucinations; verbal or motor tics; depression, euphoria, or other mood changes; priapism; signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, fever, hoarseness, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing); skin on fingers and toes changing color from pale to blue, to red, or wounds on these digits; or numb or painful extremities).

What if I forget to take a dose of Ritalin La?

If a scheduled dose of Ritalin La is missed, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, forego the one that was missed and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses or increase the dosing frequency to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Ritalin La?

Keep Ritalin La tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired capsules according to the instructions of a pharmacist. Because of its potential for abuse, keep a record of the number of capsules and the dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose on Ritalin La?

If an overdose of Ritalin La is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 911. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include vomiting, agitation, body tremors, twitching, or tics, seizures, euphoria, confusion, aural or visual hallucinations, flushing or sweating, headaches, arrhythmia or tachycardia, dilated pupils, fever, or a dry nose or mouth.
