Ropinirole HCL Information:
What is ropinirole HCl?
Ropinirole hydrochloride (HCl) is a dopamine agonist drug that is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome. It can also be used to offset the side effects caused by SSRIs and other antipsychotics or antidepressants such as sexual dysfunction. Parkinson’s disease occurs as a result of the destruction of dopamine-creating cells while restless leg syndrome is said to be caused by a dopamine imbalance. Ropinirole works to treat both conditions by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain when dopamine is absent.
How do I take ropinirole HCl?
Ropinirole HCl comes as a regular tablet or an extended-release tablet. Extended-release tablets are usually only used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. This medication should be taken orally with a glass of water. It may also be taken with food to prevent nausea. Those with Parkinson’s disease may be prescribed to take this medication up to three times a day. To treat restless leg syndrome, this medication is only taken once a day 1-3 hours before bedtime. Those with restless leg syndrome should not take the extended-release form of ropinirole. Do not crush, chew or break the extended-release tablets. Your doctor will gradually increase your doses. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. It may take several weeks to find a dosage level that works best for you. Don’t stop taking ropinirole without talking to your doctor first. Abruptly stopping treatment with this medication could lead to adverse side effects and withdrawal. Your doctor should gradually decrease your dose.

What if I forget to take a dose of ropinirole HCl?
If you miss a dose of ropinirole, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. If you’re taking ropinirole for RLS, do not take your missed dose if you remember it in the middle of the night or the next day. Wait until 1-3 hours before bedtime the following evening. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
