Ropinirole HCL Information:

What is ropinirole HCl?

Ropinirole hydrochloride (HCl) is a dopamine agonist drug that is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome. It can also be used to offset the side effects caused by SSRIs and other antipsychotics or antidepressants such as sexual dysfunction. Parkinson’s disease occurs as a result of the destruction of dopamine-creating cells while restless leg syndrome is said to be caused by a dopamine imbalance. Ropinirole works to treat both conditions by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain when dopamine is absent.

How do I take ropinirole HCl?

Ropinirole HCl comes as a regular tablet or an extended-release tablet. Extended-release tablets are usually only used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. This medication should be taken orally with a glass of water. It may also be taken with food to prevent nausea. Those with Parkinson’s disease may be prescribed to take this medication up to three times a day. To treat restless leg syndrome, this medication is only taken once a day 1-3 hours before bedtime. Those with restless leg syndrome should not take the extended-release form of ropinirole. Do not crush, chew or break the extended-release tablets. Your doctor will gradually increase your doses. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. It may take several weeks to find a dosage level that works best for you. Don’t stop taking ropinirole without talking to your doctor first. Abruptly stopping treatment with this medication could lead to adverse side effects and withdrawal. Your doctor should gradually decrease your dose.

Before taking ropinirole HCl, tell your doctor if:
  • You are allergic to ropinirole or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
  • You have a history of gambling problems.
  • You have a sleeping disorder or day-time sleepiness.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially antidepressants, levodopa, hormones including contraceptives, antipsychotics, seizure medications, sleeping pills, sedatives, antibiotics, and any medications that cause drowsiness.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • You use tobacco products or drink alcohol regularly.
  • You have kidney, liver or heart disease.
  • You have a psychotic disorder or high or low blood pressure.

What are the possible side effects of taking ropinirole HCl?

Side effects from taking ropinirole include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sleepiness, diarrhea, anxiety, confusion, memory loss, hallucinations, constipation, change in heart rate, and swelling of the extremities. These are not all the possible side effects from taking ropinirole. Talk to your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of ropinirole HCl?

If you miss a dose of ropinirole, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. If you’re taking ropinirole for RLS, do not take your missed dose if you remember it in the middle of the night or the next day. Wait until 1-3 hours before bedtime the following evening. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How do I store ropinirole HCl?

Store ropinirole tightly closed in an airtight container. Keep it at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and protect it from moisture and light. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on ropinirole HCl?

Signs of overdose on ropinirole include nausea, hallucinations, nightmares, involuntary movement or dyskinesia, fainting, confusion, chest pain, and claustrophobia. If you or someone you know has overdosed on ropinirole, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious, call 911 emergency services.

Warnings

This medication can make you extremely drowsy and cause you to suddenly fall asleep during the day. If this happens, call your doctor. Do not drive, operate machinery, or work or do any activity from a high place. Ropinirole has been known to cause gambling problems, even if an individual never had such problems before. This medication can cause other intense urges or unusual behaviors. To avoid dizziness, get up slowly from a reclining position.
