What is Semprex-D?

Semprex-D is a combination drug used to treat symptoms of allergies such as stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Semprex-D contains both an antihistamine (acrivastine) and a nasal decongestant (pseudoephedrine). This medication is similar to the more well-known Claritin D or Allegra D. It works by blocking a substance called histamine which causes allergy symptoms and opening the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.

How do I take Semprex-D?

The amount of medication needed may vary from patient to patient. Your doctor will prescribe the right amount for you. Generally this medication is taken every four to six hours up to four times daily while allergy symptoms last. Semprex-D capsules should be swallowed whole and not broken, crushed or chewed.

• Precautions

Before taking Semprex D, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Semprex-D or you have any known sensitivities to any medications.
• You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially MAO inhibitors, beta blockers or other blood pressure medications.
• You have high blood pressure or heart disease.
• You have glaucoma or high eye pressure.
• You have hyperthyroid.
• You have peptic ulcers.
• You have BPH or an enlarged prostate gland.
• You have kidney disease or reduced kidney function.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Semprex-D?

Possible side effects from taking Semprex-D include dizziness, dry mouth, headache, trouble sleeping, and nervousness. If any of these side effects become severe or if they are persistent, report them to your doctor as soon as possible. If you experience any serious or unusual side effects such as confusion, negative mood changes, vision changes or high blood pressure or rapid heartbeat, tell your doctor immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Semprex-D?

Semprex-D is taken as needed, so missing a dose is not an issue. If it has been six hours since your last dose, you may take your medication if needed. Try not to take Semprex-D right before bedtime. 

• Storage

How do I store Semprex-D?

Store Semprex-D capsules in a dry place at a room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of sunlight and away from children and pets.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Semprex-D?

Possible signs of overdose on Semprex-D include shaking, difficulty breathing, convulsions, sleepiness and loss of consciousness. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Semprex-D, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.

Talk to your doctor about the side effects of drinking while taking this medication. Semprex-D may cause drowsiness in some patients, so be careful driving or operating machinery. This medication may cause blood pressure to rise.
