Sildenafil Information:
What is sildenafil?
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor; it is prescribed to men for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and to both genders to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH, a condition in which there is high blood pressure in the lungs. Sildenafil works by relaxing blood vessels to increase and improve blood flow.
How do I take sildenafil?
Sildenafil is administered as a pill that is taken orally with water and without regard to food. The dosage strength and frequency of dosing depends on the condition being treated. For erectile dysfunction, sildenafil pills are taken on an as needed basis, thirty minutes to four hours before sexual activity; do not take more than one dose in a twenty-four hour period. If sildenafil is prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), follow the instructions provided by your doctor. Do not take more of less than has been prescribed. This medication will not cure erectile dysfunction or PAH. Ask your doctor about eating grapefruit or drinking its juice while taking this medication.
Before taking sildenafil, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to sildenafil or any of the ingredients in the medication
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child (if taking the medication to treat PAH)
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements (including St. John’s wort)
- You are taking beta blockers, barbiturates, antifungals, anticoagulants, alpha blockers, HIV protease inhibitors, or medications to treat seizures, erectile dysfunction, or hypertension
- You are taking amlodipine, rifabutin, erythromycin, nevirapine, or rifampin
- You are taking, or have recently taken, riociguat or nitrates in any form
- You have, or have had, priapism, PVOD, stomach ulcers, a heart attack, arrhythmia, stroke, chest pain, hyper- or hypotension, high cholesterol, multiple myeloma, leukemia, bleeding disorders, circulation problems, sickle-cell anemia or other blood cell problems, diabetes, or heart, kidney, or liver disease
- You have, or there is a family history of, eye disease, sudden and severe vision loss, or vision loss caused by a blood flow blockage to the nerves that control vision
- You smoke or are dehydrated
- You have a condition that affects the shape of your penis, you have had chest pain during sexual activity, or you have been advised to avoid sexual activity.
What are the possible side effects of taking sildenafil?
Some people have reported side effects after taking the sildenafil drug. Less severe symptoms include diarrhea, sleep difficulties, flushing, heartburn, headache, muscle aches, nosebleeds, numb, burning, or tingling arms, hands, feet, or legs; changes in color perception; or light sensitivity. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare advisor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), blurred or a sudden loss of vision, chest pain, dizziness, priapism, lightheadedness, fainting, itching or burning during urination, tinnitus, sudden decrease or loss of hearing, and worsening shortness of breath.
What if I forget to take a dose of sildenafil?
When sildenafil is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction, it is taken on an as needed basis. If it has been prescribed for the treatment of PAH (pulmonary arterial hypertension) and you forget to take your scheduled dose of the sildenafil drug, take it as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store sildenafil?
Sildenafil should be stored in its original packaging; keep it tightly sealed, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused pills according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on sildenafil?
If an overdose of sildenafil is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Sildenafil may cause a sudden and severe loss of vision; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. If you are female and taking this medication for PAH, contact your doctor if you become pregnant. This medication may cause a sudden decrease or loss of hearing. Sildenafil may increase the risk of heart attack in those with heart problems or disease. Contact your doctor if you have an erection lasting more than four hours. Talk with your doctor about drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking this medication. Inform all your doctors that you are taking sildenafil.
