Simcor Information:
What is Simcor?
Simcor is a combination of two products: niacin, which is a B vitamin, and simvastatin, which is in the statin family of drugs. Niacin and simvastatin both work to reduce the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver. This helps reduce your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol, lowering your risk for serious health complications such as heart disease.
How do I take Simcor?
Simcor is typically taken with a low-fat snack once daily before bed. However, defer to your doctor if he or she gives you different dosage instructions. Swallow the tablet whole rather than breaking or chewing it. Taking this medication with a small amount of food can help reduce your risk of experiencing an upset stomach.
Before taking Simcor, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to niacin, simvastatin, or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, especially blood thinners, gemifibrozil, danazol, cyclosporine, or any supplements that contain niacin or nicotinamide
- You have a medical history of liver or kidney disease
- You have a history of alcohol abuse
- You have or have ever had stomach/intestinal ulcers, gout, or bleeding problems
- You have diabetes
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Simcor?
While many patients take the Simcor drug without experiencing any side effects, some people report a flushing sensation (warmth or tingling of the skin), chills, dizziness, excessive sweating, diarrhea, nausea, or upset stomach a few hours after taking this medication. These mild side effects often go away on their own after a few weeks of taking this medicine, but if they do not, tell your doctor. In rare cases, some patients have experienced memory problems, confusion, severe dizziness, a fast heartbeat, fainting, swelling of the extremities, trouble breathing, joint pain, easy bleeding or bruising, or discolored vomit or stool. If you experience any of these serious side effects, seek medical attention immediately.
What should I do if I forget to take a dose Simcor?
Take a missed dose of Simcor as soon as you remember, but never double the dose to catch up. If it is almost time for another dose, simply skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule.
How do I store Simcor?
Keep Simcor at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep the medication’s lid tightly seal, and store this drug out of reach of pets and children.
What happens if I overdose on Simcor?
Effects of a Simcor drug overdose vary from person to person but may include dizziness, diarrhea, severe flushing, irregular heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, and fainting. If you have overdosed, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately for Simcor patient assistance. If someone in your household has overdosed and lost consciousness, call 911.
Warnings
Simcor can cause dizziness, so while taking this medication you should make sure to stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the drug affects you. Limit alcohol consumption while taking this medication, as daily alcohol use can increase your risk of liver problems. You should also keep in mind that older adults can be more sensitive to the side effects of the Simcor drug.
Brand Names
Simcor is a common brand name for niacin/simvastatin. Because it is a brand name drug, Simcor prices can be high. If you are not able to cover the cost with your insurance or a Simcor patient assistance program, make sure you take advantage of our Simcor coupon that works like a discount card and gets you up to 75% off.
