What is Sotalol?

Sotalol is a medicine in the beta blocker class prescribed to help regulate the heartbeat in those with arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) or tachycardia (fast rapid heartbeat). It is an antiarrhythmic that affects the heart muscle in order to improve its rhythm. 

How do I take Sotalol?

Sotalol is administered as a tablet that is taken orally twice a day without food on an empty stomach (at least two hours before or one hour after breakfast and the evening meal). The frequency and strength of a dose will be determined by your physician; do not take more or less than the amount prescribed or change the frequency without written permission. Do not stop taking this medication without notifying your doctor. When first beginning this medication, you may be required to spend time in a medical facility in order to monitor your heart.

Before taking Sotalol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the ingredients in the Sotalol drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements including pain relievers
  • You have, or have had heart, liver, or kidney disease or hyperthyroidism
  • You have, or have had, breathing disorders such as asthma, blood vessel diseases, diabetes, or severe allergies
  • You are taking medications to treat diabetes, asthma, migraine headaches, hypertension, heart disease, allergies, or colds
  • You are taking reserpine
  • You are taking antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum

What are the possible side effects of taking Sotalol?

Some people have reported side effects after taking their Sotalol medicine. Less severe symptoms include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, excessive tiredness, headache, lightheadedness, muscle aches, or an upset stomach. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, or swelling of the extremities.

What if I forget to take a dose of Sotalol?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Sotalol, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of pills taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Sotalol?

Keep your Sotalol medicine tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Sotalol?

If an overdose of Sotalol is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Sotalol may cause irregular heartbeats. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Sotalol can make you drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication can exacerbate its side effects.
