Spironolactone-Hctz Information:
Spironolactone HCTZ is a combination drug with the active ingredients hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone. It is a potassium-sparing thiazide diuretic (water pill). It works to prevent your body from absorbing too much salt while regulating potassium levels. It helps treat edema (fluid retention) and hypertension (high blood pressure) in patients who suffer from nephrotic syndrome of the kidney, cirrhosis of the liver, or heart failure.
Follow all instructions provided by your doctor and those written on your prescription label. Take this medication in the amounts prescribed. Do not change your dosage without consulting your doctor. Keep using this medication even if you begin to feel well.
Before taking spironolactone HCTZ, tell your doctor if:
- You have liver disease
- You have severe kidney disease
- You have asthma
- You have diabetes
- You have glaucoma
- You have lupus
- You take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- You are using other heart or blood pressure medications, including a diuretic
- You have a history of allergy to sulfa drugs or penicillin
- You use heparin or other blood thinners
Patients who use spironolactone HCTZ have reported such common side effects as drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, leg cramps, itching, hair loss, and breast swelling and tenderness. Seek help from your physician if you notice any severe side effects such as eye pain, vision problems, sudden feeling of illness or weakness, fever, chills, mouth sores, sore throat, irritated gums, trouble swallowing, bruising, bleeding, purple or red spots underneath the skin, signs of high or low potassium, or signs of any other electrolyte imbalance.
Take the dose that you missed as soon as you can remember to take it. Skip the dose you missed if it has nearly become time for your next dose. Do not take additional drugs to make up for your missed dose.
Keep this drug in a place that stays at room temperature throughout the day. Store it away from moisture. Do not allow it near excessive heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
You may begin to experience some of the more severe side-effects associated with this medicine. Get to an emergency room immediately or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Drinking alcohol while using this medication may worsen some side effects. To not use potassium supplements while using this medicine unless instructed by your doctor to do so. Avoid consuming too much salt, as a high-salt diet could counteract the effects of this medication.

Spironolactone HCTZ is the generic combination of hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone sold under the brand name Aldactazide. Other brand-name potassium-sparing diuretics with thiazide include Lasix, CellCept, and Deltasone.
