What is tramadol hcl acetaminophen?
Tramadol hcl acetaminophen is a combination of two analgesics, tramadol hydrochloride and acetaminophen, that is prescribed for temporary relief of moderate to severe pain. Because tramadol hcl is an opioid, uncontrolled use can lead to physical and psychological addiction. As such, it is only available with doctor’s prescription.
How do I take tramadol hcl acetaminophen?
Tramadol hcl acetaminophen is sold in tablet form and taken orally every four to six hours as needed to control pain, or as directed by your physician. Typically, two tablets are taken per dose for up to five days. Do not exceed eight tablets per day. Take it at the same time every day to establish a proper dosing schedule. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication without your doctor’s permission.
Before taking tramadol hcl acetaminophen, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to tramadol;
- You are allergic to acetaminophen;
- You have liver or kidney disease;
- You are allergic to any opiates;
- You are taking any other medications;
- You are taking any supplements, especially St. John’s wort;
- You have lung disease;
- You have respiratory problems that affect breathing;
- You have had seizures, brain or spinal infections, or a head injury;
- You have a brain tumor;
- You have had a stroke or any other condition that increases pressure in the brain;
- You have had depression or thoughts of suicide;
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;

What are the possible side effects of taking tramadol hcl acetaminophen?
Several side effects are associated with the taking of tramadol hcl acetaminophen, some more severe than others. Less severe side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, dry mouth, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, headaches, nervousness or uncontrollable shaking, and others. If these persist for more than a few days or they worsen, contact your physician immediately.
Some of the more severe side effects include addiction, seizures, hives, rash, hallucinations, swelling of the face, mouth, throat, and tongue, loss of consciousness, muscle tightening, loss of coordination, and increased heart rate. If you experience these, or other symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of tramadol hcl acetaminophen?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of tramadol hcl acetaminophen, take it as soon as you remember. However, if the time for the next scheduled dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the normal cycle. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
How do I store tramadol hcl acetaminophen?
Store tramadol hcl acetaminophen in its original container and keep it safe from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Keep this, and all medications, out of the reach of children. Dispose of unused and expired supplies of this medication according to your pharmacist’s instruction.
What happens if I overdose on tramadol hcl acetaminophen?
If you suspect an overdose of tramadol hcl acetaminophen, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has collapsed or breathing has stopped, call emergency services at 911. Signs of an overdose include constricted pupils, extreme drowsiness or unconsciousness, clammy skin, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, and a slowed heart rate.

Tramadol hcl acetaminophen can be habit forming; therefore do not take more than the prescribed dose or take it for a longer period than recommended by your doctor. Because this is an opioid, keep track of the number of doses to detect unauthorized use. This product contains acetaminophen, which has been associated with liver damage and failure. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Speak with your doctor before eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice. Because this medication may make you drowsy or dizzy, do not drive, or operate any heavy machinery or power tools until you are familiar with your reactions.
