Tretin-X Information:
What is Tretin-X?
Tretin-X contains a retinoid medication called tretinoin. Tretinoin is a derivative of vitamin
A that works by unclogging pores and increasing skin cell turnover which results in a clearer complexion. Tretin-X comes in various strengths including .025%, .0375%, .05%, .075% and .1%.
How do I use Tretin-X?
Before applying Tretin-X, wash your face with a gentle soap and pat it dry. If you aren’t using the Tretin-X kit, ask your doctor or dermatologist to recommend a gentle cleanser. Allow your skin to completely dry (about 20 minutes) before applying the medication. Use enough medication to apply a thin layer to the affected area. Normally, a pea-sized amount is sufficient. Allow the medication to soak in. Tretin-X is normally applied once daily, before bedtime. Your doctor will recommend the best strength and frequency for you. You may have to apply it less often. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Wash your hands after applying.
Before taking Tretin-X, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
- You have sensitive skin or if you’ve had bad reactions to other topical medications.
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or you are breastfeeding.
- You are using or taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications or vitamins or herbal supplements.
What are the possible side effects of taking Tretin-X?
Possible side effects from using Tretin-X include redness, irritation, warmth, and peeling or scaly skin at the site of application. Use of this medication may also cause a lightening or darkening of skin color and initial increase in acne breakouts. You should see a decrease in breakouts after about 6 weeks. More serious but rare side effects include swelling, blistering or crusting of the skin. If you experience any serious side effects, or your acne does not get better after a couple of months, tell your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to apply a dose of Tretin-X?
Apply Tretin-X at the same time every day to help you remember. If you forget to apply a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, as long as at least 12 hours remain before your next dose. Otherwise, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular regimen. Do not apply two consecutive doses to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Tretin-X?
Store Tretin-X in the original tube. Keep the tube tightly closed and store it at a temperature below 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Tretin-X?
Overuse of Tretin-X can result in exaggerated side effects. (See Tretin-X side effects). If your skin is severely irritated and you think you are using too much of this medication, tell your doctor and ask about changing your dosage.
