Tri-Legest Fe Information:
Tri-Legest Fe is a combination medication of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone, two female hormones that prevent ovulation. The medication causes changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach. Tri-Legest Fe is prescribed as a contraceptive measure for women.
Take your first pill on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts. You may need to use other birth control methods, including condoms and spermicide, when starting to use this medication. Take one pill every day, no more than 24 hours between dosages. When the pack runs out, begin a new pack the following day. You may get pregnant if you do not take your pills regularly.
Before taking Tri-Legest Fe, tell your doctor if:
- You have high blood pressure or varicose veins
- You have high cholesterol or triglycerides, or you’re overweight
- You have a history of depression
- You have an underactive thyroid
- You have gallbladder disease
- You have diabetes
- You have seizures or epilepsy
- You have a history of irregular menstrual cycles
- You have tuberculosis
- You have a history of fibrocystic breast disease, lumps, nodules, or an abnormal mammogram
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness or swelling, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, changes in weight or appetite, problems with contact lenses, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your periods, or decreased sex drive. Stop using your medication and call your doctor if you experience signs of a stroke (sudden numbness or weakness, sudden headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance), signs of a blood clot, heart attack symptoms, vision changes, a change in the pattern or severity of migraines; swelling in your hands, ankles or feet; a breast lump, or depression.
If you miss one active pill, take two pills on the day you remember. After that, take one pill daily for the rest of the pack. If you miss two active pills in Week 1 or 2, take two pills daily for two days in a row. Then take one pill daily for the rest of the pack. Make sure to use backup birth control for at least a week following the missed pills. If you miss two active pills in a row in Week 3, throw out the rest of the pack and begin a new pack the same day as if you’re a Day 1 Starter. If you’re a Sunday starter, keep taking pills until Sunday, then throw out the pack and start over.
If you miss three active pills in Weeks 1, 2, or 3, throw out the pack and start a new pack as if you’re a day one starter. If you’re a Sunday starter, continue taking pills until Sunday, then throw out the pills and start a new pack.
Missing two or more pills may cause you not to have a period that month. If you miss your period for two months in a row, call your doctor as you may be pregnant. If you just miss a reminder pill, throw it away, and keep taking reminder pills until the pack is empty. You don’t need to use backup contraception if you miss a reminder pill.
Store your packs at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
You should seek emergency medical attention or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Don’t smoke while taking birth control, especially if you’re older than 35. Birth control pills will not protect you from sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only safe way to protect from STIs.
