Triluma Information:

What is Tri-Luma?

If you have the skin condition melasma, your doctor may prescribe Tri-Luma. This topical medication contains three active ingredients: fluocinolone, hydroquinone, and tretinoin. Fluocinolone is a corticosteroid used to reduce redness, swelling, and itching. Hydroquinone is a skin bleaching agent, while tretinoin is a retinoid that promotes skin shedding. Together, these ingredients help to eliminate the appearance of the discolored patches of skin caused by melasma.

How do I take Tri-Luma?

The Tri-Luma drug comes as a cream that is applied to dark patches on the face. If you have never used this medication before, apply a small amount to a test patch of skin and wait 24 hours to ensure it doesn’t cause any adverse effects. If you don’t experience any serious side effects, you can proceed with the application, following the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat dry before applying a thin layer of Tri-Luma to the affected area. Rub the medication into your skin thoroughly, and do not cover the area unless your doctor has specifically told you to do so.

Before taking Tri-Luma, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any known allergies, especially to corticosteroids, sulfites, or any other ingredients in this medication
  • You have a history of skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis
  • You have asthma
  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications, especially medicated skin products, birth control pills, and drugs that increase your sensitivity to the sun
  • You are using any cosmetic products that increase your sensitivity to the sun
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Tri-Luma?

Potential mild side effects of the Tri-Luma drug may include a stinging sensation, redness, dry skin, or acne breakouts. These effects are usually short-lasting, but if they persist or get worse, inform your health care provider. Rare but more serious side effects may include new skin discoloration or cracking, the appearance of spider veins, numbness in extremities, and increased pain sensitivity. In some rare cases it is also possible for too much corticosteroid to be absorbed into the bloodstream, which can cause fatigue, weight loss, headaches, increased thirst, vision problems, and swollen feet or ankles. If you experience any of these side effects, stop using this medication and alert your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tri-Luma?

Tri-Luma is typically applied once a day, about half an hour before going to bed. If you forget to apply it one evening, use it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for another application, simply skip the missed application and continue with your normal routine.

How do I store Tri-Luma?

Tri-Luma needs to be stored in your refrigerator (do not put it in the freezer). Make sure the tube’s cap is tightly sealed, and keep this medication away from pets and children. If you no longer need this medication or if it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely discard it.

What happens if I overdose on Tri-Luma?

While applying more than the recommended amount of Tri-Luma drug can cause skin irritation, overdoses are rare. However, if someone in your household swallows any of this cream, the effects can be serious. If you know or suspect that someone in your house has consumed Tri-Luma, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Tri-Luma causes increased sun sensitivity, so stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible while using this medication, and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when you do need to be outside. Ask your doctor what SPF to use if you are outside frequently. You should also avoid tanning beds and other artificial sources of sunlight while using this drug.

Brand Names

Tri-Luma is the brand name for fluocinolone acetonide, hydroquinone, and tretinoin cream. There is currently no generic form available, and the Tri-Luma cost can be somewhat high.
