Valcyte Information:

What is Valcyte?

As an antiviral drug, Valcyte helps stop viral cells from multiplying. It may be used to prevent a CMV infection from occurring in people who have received an organ transplant or to treat an existing CMV infection. It is not a cure for the disease, but it can help control it.

How do I take Valcyte?

Valcyte comes as a tablet that is typically taken once or twice a day with food and plenty of water. Swallow the tablets whole; do not break them open or chew them, as this may cause the medication to be absorbed too quickly. Always wash your hands after touching Valcyte tablets.

Before taking Valcyte, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications or supplements, especially Cytovene (ganciclovir) or any drugs that weaken your immune system
  • You have kidney disease or are on dialysis
  • You have a blood cell disorder, such as anemia
  • You are undergoing radiation treatment
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Valcyte?

Possible side effects of the Valcyte drug include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, tremors, or high blood pressure. If any of these side effects become particularly bothersome, inform your doctor. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects: unusual mood changes, painful urination, change in your normal amount of urine, seizures, or any signs of a new infection. Other side effects that are not listed here may also occur; always let your doctor know if you experience any side effects that concern you.

What if I forget to take a dose of Valcyte?

It is best to take Valcyte at the same time every day so you are less likely to forget. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and get back to your normal dosage schedule. Never increase your dose to catch up.

How do I store Valcyte?

Store your Valcyte medication at room temperature. Do not keep it in the bathroom, as bright light and humidity can negatively affect it. You should also avoid storing this drug anywhere that children or pets could easily reach it. If your medication has expired or you no longer need it, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it safely.

What happens if I overdose on Valcyte?

Overdosing on Valcyte may cause nausea, vomiting, decreased urination, weight gain, swelling, stomach pain, jaundice, and signs of a new infection. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Warnings

Valcyte has caused birth defects in animal studies and should only be used by pregnant women when absolutely necessary. If you are a woman of child-bearing age who will be taking this medication, talk to your doctor about effective birth control methods. All patients who are taking this medicine should avoid getting vaccinations or being around people who are sick, as Valcyte may increase your risk for new infections. Valcyte may also impair your reaction time and thinking, so be careful driving or operating heavy machinery while taking this drug. Limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Brand Name

Valcyte is a brand name drug. Its generic equivalent, valganiciclovir, has been approved by the FDA and may be less expensive. However, when you use a Valcyte coupon from HelpRx, the brand name form can become more affordable.
