Venlafaxine HCL Information:

What is venlafaxine HCl?

Venlafaxine HCl is part of a family of antidepressants known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Venlafaxine hcl is used to treat major depressive order(s). By working on the central nervous system, the medication helps to elevate mood. Venlafaxine HCl is also used to treat the symptoms of anxiety under the forms of generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder (panic attacks). Venlafaxine HCl, like other SNRIs, works by increasing the amount of two chemicals called serotonin and norepinephrine, that available in certain parts of the brain.

How do I take venlafaxine HCl?

Though the dosage is based on the patient’s medical condition(s) and response to treatment, venlafaxine HCl is taken by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 2 to 3 times daily with food. In order to reduce side effects, your doctor may choose to start a patient on a low dose and gradually increase as needed. This medication should be taken regularly and at the same time each day for true effectiveness.

Before taking venlafaxine HCl, tell your doctor if you have:

  • You have heart, kidney, or liver disease.
  • You have low levels of sodium in the blood.
  • You have a history of mania or bipolar disorder.
  • You have experienced seizures.
  • You have had had suicidal thoughts.
  • You have thyroid disease or bleeding disorders.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
  • You are taking medicines that treat or prevent blood clots.
  • You have a history of allergic reaction(s) to drugs.
  • You are currently pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
  • You are breast feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking venlafaxine HCl?

If you begin taking venlafaxine HCl and an allergic reaction occurs, seek help immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Other symptoms to note and speak with your doctor about include: mood or behavior changes, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, impulsive feelings, irritability, increased agitation, hostility, aggression, or restlessness, increased depression, or suicidal thoughts.

What if I forget to take a dose of venlafaxine HCl?

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you can unless it is almost time for your next dose. If that is the case, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How do I store venlafaxine HCl?

Keep out of the reach of children. Store venlafaxine HCl at a room temperature, in a dry place. Throw away any unused medicine after its expiration date.

What happens if I overdose on venlafaxine HCl?

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or an emergency room as soon as possible. US residents can call the Poison Control Hotline at: 1-800-222-1222. Some symptoms of overdose may include: severe drowsiness, seizures, or an irregular heartbeat.

Venlafaxine HCl can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. When first taking the medication, driving, using machinery, or participating in activities that require extreme alertness and focus should be avoided. Alcoholic beverages should also be avoided if possible.

High doses or frequent usage of aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding when used with this medication.

Studies have shown that antidepressants have an increased risk, compared to placebo, of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults. If considering the venlafaxine for a child or young adult, weighing the potential risk versus the clinical need is necessary.

Do not stop taking this medication without first discussing with your doctor. Symptoms such as disorientation, mood swings, headache, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and brief feelings similar to electric shock can occur if medication is abruptly stopped.
