Vicodin Information:

What is Vicodin?

Vicodin is a branded generic which is usually hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain. However, there are other Vicodin uses, such as the hydrocodone guaifenesin combination Vicodin Tuss, which is a cough medicine that works by suppressing the activity in the brain that triggers coughing. Vicodin painkillers are effective because acetaminophen and hydrocodone each improve the function of the other. All Vicodin is considered a narcotic, opiate analgesic and antitussive.

There are 3 versions of the Vicodin prescribed as a painkiller, each with varying amounts of hydrocodone bitartrate or acetaminophen. Standard Vicodin is USP 5 mg/500 mg, whereas Vicodin ES is USP 7.5 mg/750 mg and Vicodin HP USP 10 mg/660 mg.

How do I take Vicodin?

Your dosage and dose timing will depend in part on which of the two Vicodin uses are being treated. It will also depend on your medical history, level of pain, and tolerance as determined by your doctor.

The normal adult dose of standard Vicodin is 1 or 2 pills every 4 to 6 hours, but no more than 8 Vicodin pills per day. For Vicodin ES (extra strength) and Vicodin HP (high potency), the normal adult dose is 1 pill every 4 to 6 hours, and no more than 6 Vicodin pills should be taken per day. Vicodin Tuss is often prescribed for every 4 to 6 hours, and may be available as either a tablet or syrup. Sometimes your doctor may recommend or permit you to cut tablets into a smaller dose. Only do this after talking to your doctor.

Keep in mind that some Vicodin medicine can be prescribed as ER or XT (extended release), which is generally prescribed as 1 or 2 pills every 12 hours. Never cut, crush, or chew your extended release medication.

Before taking Vicodin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking MAOIs or sodium oxybate (GHB) or have taken them in the last 14 days.
  • You are allergic to any parts of Vicodin, especially acetaminophen, which can be deadly.
  • You have any other food or medical allergies, especially to other narcotics.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, as it may be dangerous for your baby.
  • You have or have recently had a bacterial infection or have taken antibiotics, especially resulting in diarrhea.
  • You have more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day regularly.
  • You have a history of addiction or dependence, especially to alcohol or narcotics.
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially other opiates, cold or cough medicines, sleep aids, or allergy pills.
  • You have a history of or are currently having suicidal thoughts or behavior.
  • You have a history of or currently have physical issues with your head, including recent head injuries, brain tumors, stroke, or increased pressure inside the skull.
  • You have epilepsy or other disorders resulting in seizure.
  • You have asthma.
  • You have gastrointestinal problems, including ulcers and chronic inflammation, or have recently had any surgery or injury in the abdominal area.
  • You have liver, kidney, or prostate problems or disease.
  • You have urinary blockage or other problems urinating, or have had an ileostomy or colostomy.
  • You have heart or lung problems or disease, especially heart failure, COPD shortness of breath, or sleep apnea.
  • You have adrenal gland or thyroid problems or disease.
  • You have viral hepatitis.

What are the possible side effects of taking Vicodin?

Some very severe side effects can occur with Vicodin drugs. Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience any of the following: severe dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting or otherwise losing consciousness, decrease in responsiveness or awareness, inability to speak,  unusually severe drowsiness, unpleasantly odiferous breath, nose bleeds or bleeding gums, bluish skin or lips and nails, red pinpoints in skin, choking or hoarseness, trouble swallowing, sore tongue,  blood in vomit,  puffiness in the face or tongue, sores/ulcers or white spots in the mouth, dry mouth,  jaundice (yellow eyes and skin), blurred vision,  chest pain or tightness, difficult or irregular breathing or an inability to draw a full breath, fast or irregular heartbeat, fever with or without chills or chills without fever,  extremely low blood pressure or slowed pulse, unusual pain in the back or legs, general swelling in the body,  skin rash or hives, clammy skin, limp muscles or difficulty moving, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, unusual stomach or severe stomach pain, pain in the upper right of the abdomen, dark or cloudy urine, decreased frequency or volume of urination, painful or difficult urination, blood in urine or stool, tarry-colored stool, unusually lightly-colored stool, constipation.

Common side effects for Vicodin include: mild drowsiness, mild constipation, changes in mood, impaired hearing, feeling sluggish, belching or indigestion, pain in the chest (below chestbone), unusual fear or nervousness.

What if I forget to take a dose of Vicodin?

You can take your missed dose as soon as you remember it, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose.

Never take two doses of medicine at once or take extra Vicodin to make up for the missed dose. This increases your chance of overdose as well as your chance of becoming dependent.

How do I store Vicodin?

Store any Vicodin medicine at room temperature of moisture and heat.

What happens if I overdose on Vicodin?

Get emergency medical attention immediately. Overdose may lead to death. Symptoms of Vicodin drug overdose may include: depressed respiration, somnolence (sleepiness) leading to coma or stupor, hypoglycemic coma, muscle limpness, hypotension, circulatory collapse, hepatic necrosis, general malaise, nausea and vomiting, pinpoint pupils, dry mouth, seizure.

Warnings

Vicodin in any form is a highly addictive narcotic. Never take more than prescribed or continue taking medication longer than prescribed. If you have any concerns that you may become dependent or have potentially become dependent, talk to your doctor immediately.

This medication can impair your ability to focus, your thinking, or your reactions or reaction times. Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform other potentially hazardous tasks until you know how you will react.

Never stop taking a Vicodin drug "cold turkey," as it will trigger unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Follow your doctor's instructions about how to discontinue taking Vicodin.

Do not take this medication while pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor immediately.

Always be careful to take your medication as prescribed. Hydrocodone can cause respiratory depression (a slowing or stopping of breathing), and acetaminophen in large doses can begin to damage the liver. Too much of either can lead to death.

Brand Names

There are a number of brands associated with the combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Vicodin, ES and HP), including Hycet, Norco, Xodol, Zamicet, and Zolvit, not to mention more associated to hydrocodone and guaifenesin (Vicodin Tuss).
