What is Voltaren?

Voltaren, or diclofenac in its generic form, is an NSAID normally prescribed to control pain from arthritis. Diclofenac itself comes in a variety of forms and can be used to control pain resulting from several different causes. Diclofenac, like other NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) works to moderate pain by stopping inflammation through the inhibition of the body’s production of the COX enzyme, which is an enzyme that allows the body to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are responsible for inflammation and sensitizing the spinal neurons to pain. Diclofenac is different from other NSAIDS in that it has some antibacterial properties and may also reduce the formation of leukotrienes that are produced by white blood cells and also cause inflammation.

Side effects from taking oral Voltaren include indigestion, dizziness, and a risk of developing stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. These side effects are minimized with Voltaren Gel, but are still possible. Side effects from topical Voltaren include dermatitis or itching, redness, and inflammation at the site of application.

What if I forget to take a dose of Voltaren?

If you are taking Voltaren on a regular basis and you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule.  Don’t take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Voltaren?

Store Voltaren Gel and tablets at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect the tablets from moisture in an airtight container.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Voltaren?

Signs of overdose on Voltaren (which is more likely to occur with oral Voltaren than Voltaren Gel) include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, lethargy, and pain in the stomach or upper abdomen. Gastric bleeding may or may not occur. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Voltaren, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
