Vosol Information:

Vosol (acetic acid) is an antibiotic prescribed for outer ear infections (sometimes referred to as “swimmer’s ear”). It works by killing bacteria in the ear canal. It isn’t an effective option for inner ear infections.

Follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions on how to apply your Vosol ear drops. Apply several drops to a piece of cotton and insert the cotton into the affected ear. Your doctor will likely instruct you to leave the cotton in your ear for at least 24 hours, periodically adding more Vosol drops to keep it moist. Your doctor may also instruct you to apply three to four Vosol drops to your ear per day after you remove the cotton. Do not use this medicine for longer or in higher doses than your doctor has told you to.

Before using Vosol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to acetic acid or any other drugs
  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You have a ruptured ear drum
  • You are having trouble hearing out of the affected ear
  • You are experiencing severe ear pain
  • You have a fever
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

You may experience some mild stinging or burning when you apply Vosol, but this isn’t expected to last long. If the burning becomes severe, or if you experience any other ear irritation, stop using this medication and call your doctor right away. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash or difficulty breathing.

Apply the missed drops once you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

Make sure your bottle of Vosol is tightly sealed and placed out of reach of children and pets when you’re not using it. Store it at room temperature. Don’t store it in the bathroom, as bright light and moisture may affect the medicine’s composition. If you have finished your course of treatment and have leftover medicine, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

You are unlikely to experience any overdose symptoms if you apply too many drops of Vosol to your ear. However, this medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone in your home has ingested some of this medicine, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away.

Keep Vosol away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. Don’t use any other ear drops unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. You shouldn’t use this medication if you have a hole in your ear drum.

Vosol is a brand name form of acetic acid. There is also a generic version of acetic acid which may be slightly cheaper. If cost is a concern, ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch to the generic form. If you can’t switch, you can still save as much as 42% on the price of Vosol with a coupon from HelpRx.
