What is Wellbutrin XL?

Wellbutrin XL is the brand name of the drug bupropion, an aminoketone antidepressant in tablet form prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. It works by increasing certain types of brain activity.

How do I take Wellbutrin XL?

Wellbutrin XL is an extended release medication in tablet form taken once a day, usually in the morning, with at least 24 hours elapsing between each dose. Swallow the pill whole, with liquid. Do not bite, crush, or chew the tablet. If this medication is being administered to treat seasonal affective disorder, dosing will begin in the early fall, continue through the winter, and end early the following spring. Follow the dosing instructions exactly and speak with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

Before taking Wellbutrin XL, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to bupropion or any of the ingredients in the Wellbutrin XL tablet
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking other medications containing bupropion
  • You are taking beta blockers, insulin or oral diabetes medications, medications for arrhythmia, or antidepressants
  • You are taking MAOIs or have stopped taking them in the last fourteen days
  • You are taking cimetidine, efavirenz, theophylline, lopinavir, tamoxifen, thiotepa, ritonavir, cyclophosphamide, or ticlopidine
  • You drink alcohol and what your drinking habits are
  • You are taking oral steroids
  • You are taking medications to treat mental illness
  • You use a nicotine patch
  • You have, or have had, bulimia, anorexia nervosa, or other eating disorder
  • You have had seizures, or a head or brain injury
  • You have, or have had, hypertension, a heart attack, or heart disease
  • You have, or have had, kidney or liver disease or diabetes

What are the possible side effects of taking Wellbutrin XL?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking Wellbutrin XL. Less severe symptoms include anxiety, changes in appetite or the ability to taste, constipation, sleep difficulties, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, unusual or excessive sweating, agitation, increased urination, headache, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, tremors, sore throat, or weight loss. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact you doctor for assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include loss of consciousness, confusion, visual or aural hallucinations, pain in the joints or muscles, confusion, tachycardia, seizures, paranoia, hoarseness, chest pain, fever, or signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, tongue, eyes, limbs or extremities; rash, hives, blisters, itching; or difficulty breathing or swallowing).

What if I forget to take a dose of Wellbutrin XL?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Wellbutrin XL, forego it completely and resume taking the medication at the next scheduled time. Do not increase the dosage frequency or the amount to make up for one that was missed.

Keep Wellbutrin XL tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Consult a pharmacist for information about the proper method for disposing of unused or expired doses.

What happens if I overdose on Wellbutrin XL?

If an overdose of Wellbutrin XL is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include seizures, aural and visual hallucinations, and rapid or irregular heartbeat.


Wellbutrin XL may make you dizzy or drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery, equipment, or power tools, or use firearms until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol can exacerbate the side effects of Wellbutrin XL.
