Xerese Information:
What is Xerese?
The Xerese cream contains two drugs: acyclovir and hydrocortisone. This medication helps reduce the pain and size of cold sores, as well as the time it takes the cold sores to heal. It is not, however, a complete cure for cold sores caused by the herpes virus.
How do I use Xerese?
Use Xerese exactly as your doctor tells you to. This topical medication is usually applied five times a day for five days starting at the first sign of a cold sore. Apply the Xerese cream over the entire affected area, but do not rub in or cover with a bandage. If your cold sores have not improved after two weeks of treatment, talk to your doctor.
Before using Xerese, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to acyclovir, hydrocortisone, or any of the inactive ingredients in this medication (your doctor should have a list)
- You have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You have a weakened immune system
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Xerese?
Irritation at the application site is one of the most common side effects of Xerese. If you experience any skin drying, swelling, flaking, redness, or discoloration that persists or worsens, tell your doctor. Serious side effects are rare, but if you do have any other unusual or bothersome side effects, let your doctor know right away.
What if I forget to take a dose of Xerese?
Apply Xerese as often as your doctor tells you to in order for it to be most effective. If you forget an application, apply it as soon as you remember. Do not apply more of the Xerese cream than you normally would in an effort to catch up.
How do I store Xerese?
Keep Xerese in its original container, tightly sealed and out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Store at room temperature, ideally between 68 and 77 degrees. Do not freeze this medication under any circumstances. If you no longer need this topical medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Xerese?
Overdosing on Xerese through topical application is highly unlikely. However, if you or anyone in your household swallows some of this ointment, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.
Warnings
Xerese is intended for external use on the lips and mouth only and should not be used inside the eyes, nose, or mouth. This medication should not be prescribed to children under the age of 6.
