Xulane Information:

What is Xulane?

Xulane is the generic name for a transdermal contraceptive patch containing ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norelgestromin (a progestin). This medication prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation, and changing the cervical mucus and the uterine lining.

How do I take Xulane?

Xulane is administered as a transdermal patch, applied to the skin once a week for three weeks, after which there is patch free period for one week. Place the patch on a clean dry area of upper torso, outer arm, buttock, or abdomen. Do not place it in a location where it can be rubbed by clothing or other contact. Check the patch daily to make sure it is firmly attached. Apply the first patch on the first day your menstrual period begins, or the Sunday immediately following. Use back up birth control for the first seven days. After the third week (week 4), you will have a week in which no patch is applied, and your menstrual cycle should begin. Begin a new patch cycle at the end of the fourth week. The patch site can be relocated if there is irritation.

Before taking Xulane, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ethinyl estradiol, norelgestromin, or any of the ingredients in xulane
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medication, vitamins (including vitamin C, or supplements
  • You are using another type of hormonal birth control
  • You are taking NSAIDs, morphine, anticoagulants, griseofulvin, acetaminophen, antifungals, rifampin, antibiotics; atorvastatin; temazepam, clofibrate; theophylline, or cyclosporine
  • You are taking HIV protease inhibitors, oral steroids, thyroid medication, or seizure medication
  • You have, or have had, a stroke, heart valve disease, hypertension, high cholesterol or triglycerides, heart attack, blood clots, or chest pain due to heart disease
  • You have, or have had, cancer of the cervix, vagina, or uterus
  • You have, or have had, hepatitis, diabetes, jaundice, vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods or headaches accompanied by vision problems, mobility difficulties, or weakness
  • You have had a miscarriage or an abortion
  • You weigh more than 198 pounds, or you smoke
  • You have, or there is a family history of, breast cancer, an abnormal mammogram, fibrocystic disease, breast lumps
  • You have or have had, seizures, kidney, liver, or gallbladder disease, asthma, migraines, or depression

What are the possible side effects of taking Xulane?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Xulane. Less severe symptoms include acne, bleeding or spotting between menstrual periods or changes in menstrual flow or cycle, breast tenderness, enlargement, or discharge, brown or black skin patches, appetite increase or decrease, problems wearing contact lenses, hair loss, redness, rash, or irritation at patch site, nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, bloating; vaginal itching, irritation, or white discharge; weight change, or swelling of the extremities. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue, fever, rash, hives, itching, or difficulty breathing or swallowing), bulging eyes, calf pain, chest tightness or sharp or crushing chest pain; coughing blood; darkly-colored urine; lightly-colored stools; dizziness, double-vision, or partial or total loss of vision, or other vision problems; extreme fatigue; changes in appetite; severe stomach pain; shortness of breath; sleep problems; speech difficulties; depression; severe headache; unusual bleeding; severe vomiting; numb or weak arms or legs; or signs of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of Xulane?

If you forget to apply the Xulane patch at the start of a cycle, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, this creates a new Day 1 and requires a subsequent adjustment to the Patch Change day. Use an alternate means of birth control for one week. If you forget to change the patch for one or two days in the middle of a cycle, do so as soon as you remember and maintain the regular schedule. If more than two days have elapsed from the scheduled change day, stop the current cycle, apply a new patch, and begin a new cycle. Use alternative birth control measures for one week after application.

How do I store Xulane?

Keep Xulane tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not open a patch packet until you are ready to apply it. Dispose of any unused or expired patches according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Xulane?

If an overdose of Xulane is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

Xulane does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Do not wear more than one patch at a time. Smoking while using this medication increases the risk of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke; women over 35 who smoke, or those who smoke heavily are at the greatest risk. Xulane can alter the results of medical tests.
