Zanaflex Information:

What is Zanaflex?

Zanaflex (tizanidine hydrochloride) is a short-term skeletal muscle relaxant, specifically a central alpha2-adrenergic agonist. This means it temporarily relaxes muscle-tone to treat spasticity (i.e., rigid muscles) associated with injury (e.g., stroke, brain or spinal injury) or disorder (e.g., multiple sclerosis) by slowing action in the brain and blocking certain neural impulse that cause muscles to contract. Your doctor may also prescribe this for other reasons, so always follow your doctor's instructions closely.

How do I take Zanaflex?

Always take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Zanaflex tablets and capsules are not necessarily interchangeable, and you must either take this medication with food or without food consistently. Switching between taking it with or without food could lead to exacerbated side effects.

Dosing often begins at 2mg, although your doctor may step that up over a period of time to 4mg, and you will take 1 pill by mouth with a full glass (8oz) of water as many as 3 times daily at least 6 to 8 hours apart. Maximum doses should be 3 Zanaflex pills daily.

Before taking  Zanaflex , tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed, as this medication may be harmful to your baby.
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, medications, supplements or vitamins, especially antibiotics, antiplatelet drugs, antivirals, asthma medications, birth control pills, blood pressure medications, heartburn or ulcer medications, sedatives, narcotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, ciprofloxacin, or heart rhythm medications.
  • You are unable to eat your meals at regular intervals for any reason.
  • You regularly drink alcohol or are an alcoholic.
  • You have or have a history of Long QT syndrome.
  • You have a history of heart problems or disease, including low or high blood pressure or stroke.
  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Zanaflex pills.

What are the possible side effects of taking Zanaflex?

Some Zanaflex side effects are severe and require medical attention immediately. If you experience any of the following, call 9-1-1 or seek other emergency help: unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations, confusion, fainting or feeling as though you may faint, lightheadedness, difficulty breathing, slow heart rate, fever, swelling in your face or lips, swelling in your tongue or throat, jaundice, hives, stomach pain, nausea, clay-colored stool, dark urine, or painful urination.

Common side effects include: anxiety or nervousness, dry mouth, back pain, muscle weakness, numbness or a tingling sensation, fever, dizziness or drowsiness, skin rash or increased sweating, increased spasms, stomach pain and vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea. These Zanaflex side effects only need medical assistance if they persist or get worse.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zanaflex?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose and remember to maintain your regular Zanaflex dosing schedule, especially with regards to meals. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store Zanaflex?

Store your Zanaflex pills at room temperature in a child-proof container. Keep this medication away from excess heat and moisture and out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Zanaflex?

Symptoms of an overdose may include but are not limited to: confusion, drowsiness, feeling lightheaded or as though you may faint, coma or fainting, slowed heart rate or shallow breathing. If you suspect an overdose from Zanaflex, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Warnings

Zanaflex tablets and capsules are not interchangeable, especially with regards to whether they are taken with meals. Always be sure you've received the right form of medication as prescribed.

Do not suddenly discontinue this medication without instruction from your doctor, as it may cause faster heart beats, higher blood pressure, muscle rigidity, or other unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will instruct you on how to step down your medication.

If you plan to have surgery, even dental surgery, be sure to inform your surgeon that you are on this medication.

Zanaflex can affect your thinking and reactions, and may cause drowsiness, so determine your reaction to this medication before you perform potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving) or do anything that requires balance.  Get up slowly from a reclining positon. Alcohol can exacerbate these side effects.

Your doctor will want to test your liver function regularly while you are prescribed this medication. Keep all doctor and lab appointments to ensure you are not having an adverse reaction.

Brand Names

While there is a generic for Zanaflex pills - tizanidine - there are currently no other brands for this medication on the market. Because the uses for Zanaflex are specific to injury or disorder with resulting muscle rigidity, the retail cost of Zanaflex can become a bit costly.
