Zantac Information:

What is Zantac?

Zantac is classified as a histamine H?-receptor antagonist that works by preventing the release of stomach acid. Prescription Zantac is used to treat and control the pain associated with persistent heartburn caused by acid reflux; it is also used in the treatment of duodenal and other stomach and intestinal ulcers. Other Zantac uses include controlling Zollinger-Ellison disease, a physical condition in which the body produces an overabundance of stomach acid. There is also a non-prescription Zantac formulation for over-the-counter distribution to help treat or prevent less severe forms of heartburn and acid indigestion. The formulation used plays a role in the Zantac price.

How do I take Zantac?

All forms of the Zantac drug are taken orally, regardless of whether it is a tablet, syrup, or effervescent tablets or granules, usually once or twice a day. However, depending on the Zantac prescription, it may be taken up to four times a day. Be sure to read and follow your doctor’s instructions. For best results, it should be taken at least thirty to sixty minutes before consuming foods or drink that induce heartburn or trigger other targeted gastro-intestinal conditions. If the effervescent formulation has been prescribed, dissolve it completely in six to eight ounces of water before drinking.

Before taking Zantac, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are nursing
  • You are allergic to ranitidine or H2 histamine blockers
  • You are allergic to any medications
  • You are taking any medications including both prescription and over-the-counter
  • You are taking anticoagulants
  • You are taking vitamins or herbal supplements
  • You have, or have had kidney disease
  • You have, or have had, liver disease
  • You have, or have had, phenylketonuria or porphyria
  • You have any confusion or questions that interfere with you understanding of what is Zantac

What are the possible side effects of taking Zantac?

Zantac side effects have been reported by those taking the Zantac drug, some more severe than others. Less severe side effects include abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or headache. If you experience any of these and they persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe Zantac side effects reported by those taking Zantac pills or syrup include arrhythmia, vision problems, chest pains, fever, signs of anaphylaxis, unusual weakness, coughing up yellow or green mucus, easily bruised, or skin rash, peeling, or blistering. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare professional immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zantac?

If you forget to take your scheduled does of Zantac, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time for your next dose of the Zantac medication is near (this will vary depending on the reason for your Zantac use), skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not take multiple doses of Zantac medicine to make up for missed doses.

How do I store Zantac?

Keep Zantac in its original container, out of the reach of children and protected from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired doses in accordance with the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Zantac?

If an overdose of Zantac medication is suspected, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. However, if the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Warnings

If you become pregnant while taking the Zantac medicine, contact your physician; do not take the over-the-counter formulation for longer than two weeks without a doctor’s approval. If your pet accidentally ingests Zantac, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Brand Names

While Zantac is the brand name for the medication ranitidine, it has numerous variations including Zantac Syrup, Zantac 75, Zantac Premixed, and Zantac EFFERdose. While all of these are available as prescription Zantac, they may not be available in an over-the-counter formulation. Because the costs for the different Zantac drug formulations run quite high, we recommend visiting our site to take advantage of Zantac coupons and discount cards.
