Zarxio Information:
Zarxio is a synthetic form of a leukocyte growth factor, a protein that helps the body produce white blood cells. Some chemotherapy treatments can cause a reduction in neutrophils (a type of white blood cells), which leaves the body vulnerable to infection. Zarxio stimulates the production of more neutrophils to reduce a patient’s risk of infection and fever.
A doctor or nurse may administer Zarxio through an IV in a healthcare setting. Your doctor may alternatively instruct you or a caretaker to inject Zarxio under the skin when you’re at home. In this case, your doctor will show you how to prepare and inject the medication. Do not inject this medicine yourself unless you fully understand how to do it.
Before using Zarxio, tell your doctor if:
- You have any food or drug allergies
- You are allergic to latex
- You are taking any other medicines, vitamins, or supplements
- You are undergoing radiation therapy
- You have a sickle cell disorder
- You have any kidney problems
- You are breastfeeding or pregnant
Some patients report an aching feeling in their bones or muscles after taking Zarxio. Serious side effects may occur; call your doctor at once if you experience abdomen or shoulder pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, or purple spots on your skin. Get emergency medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, abdominal swelling, severe dizziness, fatigue, infrequent urination, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Tell your doctor if you miss a dose of Zarxio. Your doctor may need to reschedule your dose, especially if you have your next dose of chemotherapy coming up in less than 24 hours.
If you are going to be injecting Zarxio at home, your doctor should explain how to store the medication. Keep the prefilled syringes in the refrigerator, only taking them out 30 minutes before use. Follow your pharmacist’s instructions for disposing of leftover medicine and used syringes.
Clinical trials haven’t determined any toxic effects of a high dose of Zarxio. However, if you believe that you or someone in your home has used too much of this medicine, call your doctor or your local poison control center (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.
Don’t shake prefilled syringes of Zarxio. If you accidentally leave your syringes at room temperature for more than 24 hours, throw them away. Keep all appointments with your doctor while taking this medication; your doctor should perform frequent blood tests to ensure that Zarxio is safe and effective.
As a specialty drug, Zarxio is only available as a brand name product. Since there isn’t a cheaper generic available, a Zarxio coupon from HelpRx may be the best way to save on your medication expenses.
