Brimonidine Tartrate Information:

What is brimonidine tartrate?

Brimonidine tartrate is a topical medication in solution form that reduces eye pressure in those suffering from ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma (a condition that can cause nerve damage to the eye and lead to a loss of vision). Specifically, it is classified as an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, an intraocular pressure-lowering agent that decreases the amount of fluid in the eyes. It may be used alone or in conjunction with other medications.

How do I take brimonidine tartrate?

Brimonidine tartrate is a liquid applied to the affected eye using an eyedropper, typically administered three times a day over a twenty-four hour period, preferably in eight-hour increments. The usual dosage is one drop, but your doctor may alter this.

Before using this product, wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap, and check the dispensing end of the dropper for damage (replace if necessary). To instill this medication, tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid. Hold the dropper, with the medication in its tube, just above the surface of the eye and squeeze a single drop into the space between the lower lid and the surface of the eye. Close the eye and tilt your head down, facing the floor. Hold this position for two or three minutes, then lift your head and gently apply pressure to the tear duct. Dry off any excess medication from your face.

Wait at least five minutes before instilling another drop (if prescribed) or before applying any other topical medications you may be taking.

Before taking brimonidine tartrate, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to brimonidine tartrate;
  • You wear contact lenses;
  • You are allergic to any medications;
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements;
  • You are taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as Parnate, Marplan, Eldepryl or Nardil;
  • You are taking any topical ocular medications;
  • You are taking antidepressants;
  • You are taking blood pressure medication;
  • You have conditions that affect blood circulation;
  • You have heart, liver, or kidney disease;
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing.

What are the possible side effects of taking brimonidine tartrate?

There are side effects that have been associated with taking brimonidine tartrate, some more severe than others. Among the less severe side effects are headache, drowsiness or falling asleep, blurred vision, dry eyes, light sensitivity, or flu-like symptoms such as cough, sore throat, or fever. Other problems include red, runny, or watery eyes, heartburn, or pressure and pain in the face. Call you doctor if any of these persist or become worse.

Severe side effects include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or mouth), breathing difficulties, fainting, flashes of light, specks, or blind spots in the field of vision; dizziness; nausea. Call your doctor if you experience any of these conditions.

What if I forget to take a dose of brimonidine tartrate?

If you miss your regularly scheduled dose of brimonidine tartrate, take it as soon as you remember or are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed application and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not double up on dosage.
