Cortisone Information:
What is cortisone?
Cortisone is a drug of the corticosteroid class and is used to treat a number of conditions including allergy disorders, arthritis, skin conditions, psoriasis, lupus, breathing disorders, and ulcerative colitis among others. Cortisone works by preventing the substances that cause inflammation from being released by the body.
How do I take cortisone?
Cortisone is administered either as pills that are taken orally, or through intramuscular (IM) injections. The strength, method of delivery, and frequency of dosage are determined by the condition being treated. Injections are administered in a healthcare setting by a medical professional. When taking cortisone pills, follow the dosing instructions provided by your doctor and pharmacist. Continue to take this medication even if you begin to feel well.
Before taking cortisone, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to cortisone or any of the ingredients in the cortisone medicine;
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements;
- You are taking seizure medications, anticoagulants, NSAIDs (especially aspirin), oral diabetes medications, insulin, diuretics, ketoconazole, cyclosporine, or rifampin;
- You have, or have recently been exposed to, herpes simplex of the eye, measles, or chickenpox;
- You have HIV or AIDS;
- You have a fungus infection, or an infection of any kind;
- You have diabetes mellitus, strongyloides, tuberculosis, glaucoma, malaria, depression or other mental disorder, stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis, or diverticulitis;
- You have, or have had, hypertension, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, heart, kidney, or liver disease, or kidney stones;
- You have, or have had, hyper- or hypoactive thyroidism, systematic lupus erythematosus, osteoporosis, or myasthenia gravis.
What are the possible side effects of taking cortisone?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking cortisone. Mild symptoms include sleep problems, acne, bruising or discoloration of the skin, mood changes, wounds that heal slowly, dry or thinning skin, sweating, headache, nausea, bloating, dizziness, changes in body fat location or shape, or bloating. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), unusual thoughts or behavior, coughing up blood, stools that are bloody or tarry, dangerous hypertension, low potassium, pancreatitis, severe depression, vision problems, seizures, or rapid weight gain.
What if I forget to take a dose of cortisone?
If you forget to take a scheduled dose of cortisone, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular routine. Do not increase the amount taken or change the dosing regimen to compensate for having missed a dose.
How do I store cortisone?
Keep the cortisone medicine tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the recommendations of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on cortisone?
If an overdose of cortisone is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking the cortisone drug. Do not receive a live vaccine while using this medication. Drinking alcohol may exacerbate the cortisone side effects.
