Desloratadine Information:
What is desloratadine?
Desloratadine is an antihistamine drug that is similar to the over-the-counter antihistamine loratadine. The difference is that desloratadine is the active form of the drug and it does not have to be metabolized before it can work. This can make it a stronger and more effective allergy medication for some. Desloratadine may be prescribed to treat seasonal or year-round allergies as well as skin reactions such as hives.
How do I take desloratadine?
Desloratadine comes in the form of a pill, an orally-disintegrating tablet or an oral solution. This medication only needs to be taken once daily to be effective. It can be taken with or without food. Take desloratadine at the same time every day for as long as allergies persist. Do not crush, chew or break desloratadine pills. The disintegrating tablets should be kept in their blister package until they are used. Peel back the foil to remove the tablets. Do not push them through the foil, as they may break. Remove the tablet with dry hands and place it under your tongue. Allow the tablet to dissolve completely. You may drink water once the tablet has dissolved.
Before taking desloratadine, tell your doctor if:
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to desloratadine or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially sedatives, cold medications and other allergy medications.
What are the possible side effects of taking desloratadine?
Desloratadine may cause side effects. These include drowsiness, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping and sore throat. If any of these side effects are extreme or don’t go away over time, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report immediately include signs of infection and allergic reaction.
What if I forget to take a dose of desloratadine?
If you forget to take a dose of desloratadine, take the missed dose whenever you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Don’t take a double dose to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store desloratadine?
Store desloratadine at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on desloratadine?
Signs of desloratadine drug overdose may include sleepiness. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on desloratadine, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive or not breathing, call 911.
