Diazepam Information

What is diazepam?

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine drug, meaning it acts on the neurotransmitter GABA to realize a sedative, anticonvulsant, and muscle-relaxing effect. Diazepam is also sold as Valium and is a basic drug used to treat a variety of conditions including seizures, panic attacks, alcohol withdrawal, opiate withdrawal, muscle spasms, and restless leg syndrome.
How do I take diazepam?

Diazepam comes as a tablet, extended-release capsule, or a liquid to take orally.  Buy diazepam at your local pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor. Never open, chew, or crush the extended-release capsules; swallow them whole. Diazepam is usually taken 1-4 times a day and may be taken with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label and instructions given to you by your doctor. Take diazepam exactly as directed.

Liquid diazepam comes with a specially marked dropper for measuring the dose. Measure your prescribed dose with the dropper and then mix it in water, juice or other cool or room temperature beverage just before taking it. It can also be mixed with applesauce or pudding just before taking the dose.
Before taking diazepam, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to diazepam, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, clonazepam, clorazepate, estazolam, flurazepam, lorazepam, oxazepam (Serax), prazepam (Centrax), temazepam (Restoril), triazolam (Halcion), or any other drugs.
  • You are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, especially antihistamines, cimetidine (Tagamet), digoxin (Lanoxin), disulfiram, fluoxetine (Prozac), isoniazid (INH, Laniazid, Nydrazid), ketoconazole, levodopa (Larodopa, Sinemet), medications for depression, seizures, pain, Parkinson's disease, asthma, colds, or allergies, metoprolol, muscle relaxants, birth control pills, probenecid (Benemid), propoxyphene (Darvon), propranolol (Inderal), ranitidine (Zantac), rifampin (Rifadin), sedatives, sleeping pills, theophylline, tranquilizers, and valproic acid.

  • You have sleep apnea or respiratory disorders.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • You are 65 years of age or older. Older adults should not take diazepam because it is not as safe as other medications that can be used to treat the same conditions.
  • You use tobacco products. Cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug.
  • You are taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, especially St. John’s wort.
  • You have ever been dependent on alcohol or other drugs.

If you use antacids, take diazepam first. Then wait one hour before taking the antacid.
What if I forget to take a dose of diazepam?

If you are taking diazepam regularly, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of diazepam to compensate.
