Epivir Information:
What is Epivir?
Epivir helps strengthen the immune system in people who have HIV. It works by decreasing the amount of the virus in the body. It will not cure HIV, but it will reduce the risk of complications. The Epivir drug is usually prescribed alongside other HIV medications.
How do I take Epivir?
Epivir tablets can be taken with or without food. Your dosage will depend on your condition and response to treatment, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Try to take Epivir at evenly spaced intervals in order to keep the amount of medicine in your body consistent.
Before taking Epivir, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medicines
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially products containing lamivudine or emtricitabine
- You have used a medication similar to lamivudine before (e.g. abacavir, didanosine)
- You have kidney disease
- You have liver disease or have had a liver transplant
- You have or have had pancreatitis
- You have a history of alcohol abuse
- You are breastfeeding or pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Epivir?
Potential side effects of the Epivir drug include nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, cold-like symptoms, and difficulty sleeping. These side effects usually go away on their own, but let your doctor know if you have any conditions that persist or become bothersome. Contact your doctor immediately if you have dark urine, clay-colored stool, jaundice, unusual mood changes, sudden weight loss, persistent muscle soreness or weakness, or signs of a new infection. Get emergency medical attention if you have severe stomach pain, nausea with vomiting, numbness or tingling in your limbs, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, or an irregular heart rhythm. These are not all the possible side effects of Epivir; consult your doctor if you have any other side effects that concern you.
What if I forget to take a dose of Epivir?
Take the missed dose immediately once you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Don’t take more medicine than you normally would in a single dose in an effort to catch up.
How do I store Epivir?
Store Epivir in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Do not keep it in the bathroom, since bright light and moisture can negatively affect it. Keep this and all other prescription medications out of reach of any children or pets in your home.
What happens if I overdose on Epivir?
If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on the Epivir drug, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) or go to the nearest emergency room.
Warnings
While Epivir can help treat HIV, it will not stop the spread of this infection to other people. Do not share razors, needles, or toothbrushes, and do not have unprotected sex. Drinking alcohol while taking Epivir may increase your risk of liver damage, so avoid alcoholic beverages. Some people become dizzy after taking this medication, so be careful driving and performing other tasks that require clear focus until you know how Epivir affects you.
Brand Names
Epivir is a brand name form of lamivudine. A generic version of lamivudine is also available in most pharmacies and may be less expensive. Talk to your doctor to determine which HIV medications are right for you, and use HelpRx to get discount coupons for Epivir and any prescription drugs that aren’t covered by your insurance.
