Estrostep Fe Information:
What is Estrostep Fe?
Estrostep Fe contains graduated levels of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) over a 21-day period. The pack begins with 20mcg of ethinyl estradiol and increases to 30mcg in the second week and 35mcg pills during the third week. These pills also contain 1mg of norethindrone acetate (progestin). The last seven pills in the pack only contain ferrous fumarate or iron. This is when menstruation should begin. Estrostep Fe is only one of three birth control pills that is approved for the treatment of acne. It may be prescribed to girls 15 and older who have started their period.
How do I take Estrostep Fe?
You should start taking Estrostep Fe on the first Sunday after your period starts or on the first day of your period. Your doctor will help you decide which is better. Depending on whether or not you are switching from another birth control, you may have to use back-up contraception for 7 days. Pick a time of day to take your pill when it is most convenient for you, and take one pill per day at the same time every day until you finish the pack. Your period should start when you are taking the last 7 pills. Like most birth controls, the pill is less effective if it is not taken at the same time every day.
Before taking Estrostep Fe, tell your doctor if:
- You have a clotting disorder or if you’ve ever had a blood clot.
- You’ve ever had a stroke or heart attack.
- You smoke cigarettes.
- You have diabetes.
- You have thyroid problems.
- You’ve ever had breast cancer or any cancer of the reproductive system.
- You’ve ever had jaundice or liver disease.
- You’re experiencing abnormal bleeding or spotting.
- You have gall bladder disease.
- You have a history of depression or other mental illness.
- You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Estrostep Fe pills.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements, especially antibiotics, antivirals, St. John’s wort, blood thinners, seizure medications, NSAIDs, iron supplements, steroid medications and any drugs or supplements with hormones.
- You are breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Estrostep?
Estrostep Fe may cause side effects such as changes in menstruation, headaches, bloating, nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, changes in weight, dark spots on the skin, cramps and problems with contact lenses. Some of these side effects should lessen over time as your body adjusts. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor. Serious but rare side effects that should be reported immediately include high blood pressure, migraines, negative mood changes, severe abdominal pain, breast lumps, jaundice, heavy bleeding and missed periods. Birth control pills can increase the chances of developing blood clots and having a stroke or heart attack. These symptoms include weakness or numbness on one side of the body, pain or swelling in the groin or calf, confusion, dizziness, slurred speech, shortness of breath and pain in the chest, left arm or jaw.
What if I forget to take a dose of Estrostep Fe?
If you miss a dose of Estrostep Fe, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and then continue on your regular schedule. If you miss two pills, take two the day you remember and two the next day. Ask your doctor what to do if you miss two pills in the third week of the pack. If you miss two pills in a row, use back up contraception for 7 days. If you miss any of the last 7 pills, you do not have to take them or use back-up contraception.
How do I store Estrostep Fe?
Store Estrostep Fe pills at room temperature and keep them away from light and moisture. Keep your pills in a place where you will always be able to take them at the same time every day.
What happens if I overdose on Estrostep Fe?
