Helidac Information:
What is Helidac?
Helidac is a drug therapy pack that helps to treat ulcers that are caused or exacerbated by infections of pylori. Bacteria that are sensitive to the combination of bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline die before they can cause excessive damage and increase the size of the associated ulcer.
How do I take Helidac?
A dose of the Helidac therapy pack contains 2 pink chewable tablets of bismuth subsalicylate, 1 white tablet of metronidazole, and 1 yellow and black capsule of tetracycline. Patients take a dose, measured out into packs, of a Helidac therapy pack 4 times daily. The doses are usually taken at mealtimes and at bedtime unless otherwise directed by a doctor. Thoroughly chew the 2 pink tablets and swallow them before taking other medication. Then, take the white tablet along with the black and yellow capsule. Drink a full 8-ounce glass of water.
Before taking Helidac, tell your doctor if:
You are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant
You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicines
You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
You have a history of blood problems
You have a history of liver or kidney problems
You have a seizure disorder, or nervous system or brain problems
You have or are recovering from a viral infection
What are the possible side effects of taking Helidac?
Helidac is associated with common side effects such as constipation, darkened tongue, dark stools, diarrhea, indigestion, loss of appetite, metallic taste, mild stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, weakness, dizziness, or headache. Be aware of any severe side effects and call a doctor if you experience severe allergic reactions; black, hairy, or sore tongue; black, tarry, or bloody stools; pale stools; reduced or increased urine production; dark urine; changes in vision; chest pain; confusion; speech problems; decreased coordination; depression; difficult or painful urination; numbness, tingling, or burning in the extremities; weakness on one side; red, swollen, peeling, or blistered skin; ringing in the ears; seizure;, severe diarrhea; severe headache; stomach pain or cramps; stiff neck; unusual vaginal odor or discharge; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; white patches in the mouth or on the tongue; or jaundice.
What if I forget to take a dose of Helidac?
Skip your missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Never take 2 doses at once, as it may cause an overdose. If you happen to miss more than 4 doses of Helidac, contact your doctor for instructions.
How do I store Helidac?
Store Helidac at room temperature and away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep Helidac in a place that is out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Helidac?
Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or your local emergency room if you believe you have overdosed. Symptoms of an overdose of Helidac may include confusion, decreased coordination, fast heartbeat, fever, difficulty breathing, ringing in the ears, seizures, fatigue, sluggishness, severe or persistent diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
Warnings
Helidac has been known to cause dizziness. The dizziness effect may be worsened by the consumption of alcohol. Use Helidac with caution when considering whether to perform potentially dangerous tasks such as operating machinery. Helidac may also temporarily discolor or darken the tongue and stools, but this is not a cause for concern. Use of Helidac may make you more sensitive to ultraviolet rays and sunburn. Wear protective clothing if you plan to go outside.
