Indomethacin Information:
What is indomethacin?
Indomethacin is a prescription NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that is used to treat moderate to severe pain caused by inflammation arising from a variety of conditions, the most common of these being osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. It works similarly to other NSAIDs by inhibiting the COX enzymes that help produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins have several effects on the body including regulation of the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue and inflammation. By blocking the production of prostaglandins, pain resulting from inflammation or muscle contraction may be resolved for four to six hours per dose.
How do I take indomethacin?
Indomethacin comes as a capsule to be taken orally with a glass of water or as a suppository. Follow dosing instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take this medication more often or in higher doses than needed to control symptoms of pain. Suppositories are absorbed more rapidly and have a quicker onset than oral indomethacin. To insert indomethacin suppositories, dip the end of a suppository in water. Then lie on your left side and move your right knee up to your chest. Using your right hand, insert the suppository about one inch into the rectum. If you are left-handed, do the opposite. Remain in a reclining position for at least 15 minutes before getting up. Wash your hands with soap and water. Try to keep the suppository in place for at least an hour.
- You are allergic to indomethacin, other NSAIDs, or any of the ingredients in this medication.
- You have liver or kidney disease.
- You have asthma or Parkinson’s disease.
- You have high blood pressure or seizures.
- You have nasal polyps or a chronically stuffy or runny nose.
- You have stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins, especially ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, diuretics, blood thinners, methotrexate, and medications used to treat high blood pressure, and other NSAIDs.
- You drink more than three alcoholic beverages per day.
What are the possible side effects of taking indomethacin?
Possible side effects from taking indomethacin include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and sleepiness. Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, blurred vision, confusion, anxiety, diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Alcohol increases chances and severity of side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of indomethacin?
If you forget to take a dose of indomethacin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How do I store indomethacin?
Store indomethacin tightly closed in its original container away from heat, light and moisture. Keep this medication away from children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on indomethacin?
Signs of overdose on indomethacin include severe stomach pain, nausea, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, slow breathing, confusion, extreme fatigue or drowsiness, and seizures. If you or someone you know has overdosed on indomethacin, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious, not breathing, or unresponsive, contact 911 emergency services.
Warnings
As with other NSAIDs, smoking and drinking alcohol while taking indomethacin regularly increases the risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. This medication may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Treatment with other NSAIDs or painkillers that have fewer side effects should be considered before indomethacin for the elderly.
