What is Levaquin?

Levaquin is an oral antibiotic medication that may be used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, kidneys, sinuses, prostate, or bladder. Levaquin also helps to treat bacterial infections that cause bronchitis, pneumonia, or an exposure to anthrax or plague. Levaquin is part of a family of antibiotics called quinolones that work by stopping the growth of bacteria.

How do I take Levaquin?

Levaquin medicine comes in tablet and liquid form and should be taken orally, and usually once daily. The duration will vary depending on the type of infection that is being treated. Levaquin in its tablet form does not need to be taken with food, but if using the liquid solution, it should be taken 1-2 hours prior to eating. Take Levaquin around the same time every day and exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Before taking Levaquin, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to Levaquin or have had a bad reaction to it in the past
• You are allergic to any other quinolone or fluoroquinolone antibiotics (ie: ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and sparfloxacin)
• You are allergic to any other medications
• If you are taking any other prescription and nonprescription medications, supplements, or vitamins. Especially if you are taking any anticoagulants (blood thinners), antacids, antidepressants, antipsychotics, cyclosporine, diuretics, insulin, oral diabetes medication, medications for irregular heartbeat, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, naproxen, tacrolimus, or theophylline. Any of these may cause adverse reactions and should be discussed with your doctor
• If you or any family members have or have ever had an irregular heartbeat or prolonged QT interval (a rare heart problem that may cause irregular heartbeat, fainting, or sudden death)
• If you have or have ever had nerve problems, low potassium levels, a slow heartbeat, cerebral arteriosclerosis, seizures, chest pain, or liver disease
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• You have myasthenia gravis
• You have arthritis, kidney, or liver disease.
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Levaquin?

Less serious Levaquin side effects that should be mentioned to your doctor include:

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, heartburn, headache, or vaginal itching and/or discharge.

More serious Levaquin side effects that require medical attention immediately include: severe diarrhea, watery or bloody stools, fever, stomach cramps, dizziness, confusion, nervousness, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, abnormal dreams, hallucinations, depression, thoughts of suicide or uncontrollable shaking.

In some rare cases, symptoms of a ruptured tendon or tendinitis can happen. Discontinue Levaquin right away and call your doctor immediately or seek medical attention as soon as possible. Symptoms may include: rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistering of the skin, fever, swelling of the eyes, face, mouth, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs, hoarseness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, increased heartbeat, fainting or loss of consciousness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, decreased frequency of urination, seizures, unexplained bruising or bleeding, or pain in the joints or muscles. 

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Levaquin?

If a dose of Levaquin is missed, administer it as soon as you recall. If it is just about time for the next dose, do not double up on doses, skip your missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. 

• Storage

How do I store Levaquin?

Levaquin should be kept out of reach of children. The medication is best kept its original packaging or bottle. It should be kept in a dry, cool area, away from any moisture.  If the medication has expired or is no longer needed, it should be discarded. 

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Levaquin?

If an overdose or an allergic reaction is suspected, contact your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222, call 911, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Warnings

Levaquin has been known to cause confusion, dizziness, lightheadedness, and tiredness. Avoid activities that require concentration or focus until you have assessed how you respond to the medication. Users should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light because Levaquin can potentially cause skin to become light-sensitive.

Liver damage has been linked to use of Levaquin. If you develop any upper right abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin, experience dark urine, or light-colored stools, speak with your doctor as soon as possible.

Levaquin and antibiotics like it can cause tendon rupture. Inform your healthcare provider if you develop tendon soreness or pain. Those over 60 years old who have or have had liver, lung, or heart transplants have a higher risk of tendon rupture. The medication is also not recommended for young children. A condition known as Pseudotumor cerebri, involving high pressure inside the cranium has also been reported rarely in Levaquin users.

Levaquin can cause changes in blood sugar (both high and low) in diabetic people. Levaquin can also cause yeast infections, since it works to get rid of the “bad” bacteria, and as a result, eliminates the necessary "good" bacteria in the body.
