Meloxicam Information:

Why is this medication prescribed?

Meloxicam is used to relieve pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis (arthritis caused by a breakdown of the lining of the joints) and rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis caused by swelling of the lining of the joints). Meloxicam is also used to relieve the pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness caused by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (a type of arthritis that affects children) in children 2 years of age and older. Meloxicam is in a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.

How should this medicine be used?

Meloxicam comes as a tablet and suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food. Take meloxicam at the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take meloxicam exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Shake the suspension well before each use to mix the medication evenly

Other uses for this medicine

Meloxicam is also used sometimes to treat ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis that mainly affects the spine). Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

What special precautions should I follow?

Be sure to mention the medications listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section and any of the following: angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as benazepril (Lotensin), captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), and quinapril (Accupril); cholestyramine (Questran); diuretics ('water pills'); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others); and methotrexate (Rheumatrex). Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.
  • tell your doctor if you have or have ever had asthma, especially if you have frequent stuffed or runny nose or nasal polyps (swelling of the lining of the nose); swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs; or kidney or liver disease.

What is meloxicam?

Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to control pain in patients with arthritis. Other meloxicam uses include pain management of menstrual cramps and fever reduction. Meloxicam works by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme which prevents the creation of prostaglandins that play a part in inflammation. Because meloxicam is a selective COX-2 inhibitor drug, it poses less of a risk of gastrointestinal problems than other NSAIDs that block both COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 plays a part in the production of protective mucus that lines the stomach, which is why some patients may experience GI bleeding or ulcers with the use of NSAIDs.

How do I take meloxicam?

Take Meloxicam as a pill or as a liquid. Request a prescription for whichever form is best for you. Meloxicam can be purchased in 7.5mg or 15mg tablets. The oral solution should be measured in doses of 5mL. Follow instructions provided by your doctor and pharmacist. This medication is usually just taken once a day at the same time every day.

Before taking meloxicam, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have nasal polyps or asthma.
  • You have liver or kidney disease.
  • You have experienced edema or swelling in any part of the body.
  • You are anemic.
  • You smoke cigarettes or drink more than three alcoholic beverages per day.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in meloxicam pills or oral solution.
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications including other NSAIDs, blood pressure medications, diuretics, lithium, antacids, cholestyramine, warfarin, or methotrexate.

What are the possible side effects of taking meloxicam?

Possible Meloxicam side effects include bloating, gas, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, upset stomach, and a stuffy or runny nose. More serious side effects that you should report to your doctor immediately include chest pain, accelerated heart rate, elevated blood pressure, flu-like symptoms, blood in stools or vomit, jaundice, extreme lethargy, swelling of any part of the body, stomach pain, and back pain.

What if I forget to take a dose of meloxicam?

If you forget to take a dose of your meloxicam medication, take the dose you missed as soon as you think of it. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue to follow your normal regimen. Don’t take double doses to make up for missed ones.

How do I store meloxicam?

Store meloxicam pills and oral solution in an airtight container in a dry place away from light. This medication should be stored between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep meloxicam out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on meloxicam?

Signs of overdose on meloxicam include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, pain in the upper abdomen, elevated blood pressure, and possibly coma. Bleeding from the GI tract may or may not occur. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on meloxicam medication, contact your Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is in critical condition, call 911.

Warnings

Meloxicam side effects, like those of other NSAIDs, can include gastrointestinal problems like ulcers and bleeding. NSAIDs can also elevate the risk of having a stroke or heart attack. This is especially relevant with long-term use. Alcohol and smoking can exacerbate these risks.
