What is Potiga?
Potiga is the drug ezogabine, an anticonvulsant prescribed to control partial onset seizures in adults. It reduces abnormal electrical activity in the brain to help control the seizures.
How do I take Potiga?
Potiga is administered as a tablet that is taken orally with water three times a day, with or without food. The strength and frequency of dosage will be determined by the individual’s medical profile. Swallow this medication whole; do not split, crush, dissolve, or chew the tablet. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well; do not stop taking Potiga without permission from your healthcare provider.
Before taking Potiga, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to ezogabine or any of the ingredients in Potiga
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking antibiotics, antihistamines, medications for irritable bowel disease, ulcers, motion sickness, urinary problems, or Parkinson’s disease
- You are taking vanetanib, amiodarone, thioridazine, sotalol, carbamazepine, chloroquine, quinidine, pimozide, chlorpromazine, procainamide, phenytoin, citalopram, pentamidine, digoxin, methadone, disopyramide, mesoridazine, dofetilide, flecainide, droperidol, ipratropium, or haloperidol
- You have, or have had, BPH or conditions that make urinating difficult urinating,
- You have, or have had, heart failure, heart problems, a long QT interval, or liver or kidney disease
- You have, or have had, low potassium or magnesium levels
- You drink alcohol, including the amount and frequency of consumption
What are the possible side effects of taking Potiga?
Some people have reported side effects after Potiga. Mild symptoms include abnormal urine color, constipation, speaking difficulties, drowsiness, inability to understand a speaker or written language, dizziness, confusion, inability to concentrate; numb, tingling, pricking, or burning sensations, sensations of crawling skin; memory problems; nausea; tiredness; bodily tremors; weakness; weight gain; coordination or balance issues; difficulty walking.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, blood in urine, blue tint to skin, lips, or fingernails; vision changes, problems emptying your bladder, problems thinking clearly, impaired judgement, inability to grasp reality, visual and aural hallucinations, problems trying to urinate, painful urination, or a weak urine stream.
What if I forget to take a dose of Potiga?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the Potiga drug, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or alter the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Potiga?
Keep Potiga tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Potiga?
If an overdose of Potiga is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include aggressive behavior, agitation, arrhythmia, and irritability.
Warnings
Potiga may make your drowsy, confused, dizzy, or affect your ability to concentrate; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Potiga may affect your mental health, including inducing thoughts of suicide. Failing to use this medication as directed may cause retinal changes and vision loss. Potiga may cause changes (temporary) in skin color. Abruptly discontinuing Potiga may cause seizures to worsen.
