Rasuvo Information:
What is Rasuvo?
Rasuvo is a brand name of the drug methotrexate, an antimetabolite prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis in adults, and active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children when other medications do not produce positive results. It works by slowing the growth of certain cells that reproduce quickly.
How do I take Rasuvo?
Rasuvo is administered by subcutaneous injection once a week, on the same day, at the same time of day. Follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription exactly. If this is the first time using an auto-injector pen, have your healthcare provider demonstrate the proper method. Do not use this medication if it has been frozen, is cloudy, discolored, or contains particulate matter. Do not take Rasuvo for longer than is prescribed.
Before taking Rasuvo, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to methotrexate or any of the ingredients in Rasuvo
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking theophylline, sulfonamides, proton pump inhibitors, probenecid, phenytoin, NSAIDS, medications for rheumatoid arthritis, folic acid, or antibiotics
- You are taking tretinoin, sulfasalazine, isotretinoin, azathioprine, or acitretin
- You have, or have had, diabetes, or heart, liver, or kidney disease
- You have, or have had lung disease, excess fluid in the area around the lungs, excess fluid in the stomach, low blood cell count, or a blood cell or bone marrow condition
- You have, or have had, ulcerative colitis, or stomach ulcers
- You are obese
- You drink alcohol, including the amount and frequency
What are the possible side effects of taking Rasuvo?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Rasuvo. Less severe symptoms include pain, redness, irritation, or swelling at the injection site; hair loss; pain in the joints or muscles; reddened eyes; swollen gums. Contact your healthcare provider if any of these conditions persist or worsen.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, confusion; decreased urination; difficulty moving one or both sides of the body; walking difficulties; impaired speech; loss of consciousness; memory loss; seizures; severe headache; stiff neck; sudden fever; swelling of the limbs or extremities; unsteady gait; vision problems; vomiting; weakness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Rasuvo?
Contact your doctor for instructions if you forget to inject your scheduled dose of Rasuvo. Do not increase the dosage or change the injection schedule to compensate for a missed dose.
How do I store Rasuvo?
If Rasuvo will be administered at home, your doctor or pharmacist will instruct you as to the proper procedure for storage. Ask your pharmacist about the proper procedure for disposal of unused or expired doses and for the safe disposal of used auto-injector pens.
What happens if I overdose on Rasuvo?
An overdose of Rasuvo can be life-threatening. If an overdose is suspected, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include black, tarry, or bloody stools; bloody vomit; signs of an infection such as chills, sore throat, congestion, ongoing cough, or fever; sores in the mouth and throat; unusual bruising or bleeding; vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
Warnings
