Requip Information:
What is Requip?
Requip is a type of drug known as a dopamine agonist. The natural chemical dopamine is typically low in people with Parkinson’s, and there is some evidence that the brain does not process dopamine signals correctly in people with RLS. Requip stimulates the dopamine system in the brain, which helps reduce the uncontrollable movements caused by Parkinson’s and RLS.
How do I take Requip?
Your Requip dosage will depend on your condition and response to treatment, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Take your prescribed dose of the Requip medicine with or without food. If you see part of the tablet in your stool later, let your doctor know, as this could mean that your body did not fully absorb the drug. Requip may cause withdrawal symptoms, so do not suddenly stop taking it without talking to your healthcare provider. Your doctor may gradually lower your dose to prevent adverse effects.
Before taking Requip, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have a sleep disorder other than RLS, or you have another condition that causes daytime tiredness
- You are a smoker
- You regularly drink alcohol
- You have low or high blood pressure
- You have heart disease or other heart problems
- You have kidney disease or are on dialysis
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Requip?
The most commonly reported side effects of the Requip drug include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting. Most people who take this medication do not experience serious side effects, but a very small percentage of people have experienced hallucinations, unusual urges and behaviors, severe dizziness or drowsiness, muscle pain or weakness, flu-like symptoms, and dark urine. Tell your doctor right away if you have any of these serious side effects. You should also let your doctor know if your RLS symptoms get worse, occur at a different time of day than usual, or move to your hands or arms.
What if I forget to take a dose of Requip?
Take the missed dose of Requip medicine as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If it is almost time for another dose, skip the missed one and get back to your normal dosage schedule.
How do I store Requip?
Keep Requip in a tightly sealed container at room temperature, stored somewhere that children and pets cannot easily access it. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. If you no longer need this medicine and are unsure how to safely dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Requip?
If you or someone in your home has overdosed on Requip, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency medical facility.
Warnings
Because dizziness and drowsiness are relatively common side effects of Requip, you should be very careful driving or performing any other tasks that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you. This drug also causes some people to develop unusual urges, such as the urge to gamble, so let your doctor know if you begin thinking or acting in a way that is different than usual.
Brand Names
Requip is a brand name drug. There is also an extended release form, Requip XL, which has been approved for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease but not Restless Legs Syndrome. Additionally, there is a generic equivalent called ropinirole. Talk to your doctor to determine which treatment option is right for you.
