What is Acitretin?

Acitretin is a retinoid drug which means that it is related to vitamin A. High levels of vitamin A and retinoids can be toxic. Acitretin works by regulating skin cell proliferation and reducing inflammation and keratinization in skin cells.

How do I take Acitretin?

If you are a women, you will be required to use two forms of birth control while taking acitretin because this medication can cause serious birth defects. Acitretin comes in the form of a capsule and is usually taken once daily with your heaviest meal. Acitretin is better absorbed with fat. Your doctor may change your dose over time based on your response. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions and keep any lab appointments. 

Before taking Acitretin, tell your doctor if:

  • You have heart disease or you’ve ever had a stroke.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You are depressed or have a mental illness.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you plan to get pregnant within the next three years.
  • You have diabetes or high blood sugar levels.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in acitretin pills.
  • You have high cholesterol or triglycerides.
  • You have any bone, joint or spinal problems or pain.
  • You are undergoing phototherapy.
  • You drink alcohol on a regular basis.
  • You are taking or using any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, especially anything that contains retinoids or vitamin A.

What are the possible side effects of taking Acitretin?

Acitretin can cause unpleasant side effects that include dry skin, dry mouth, dry eyes, dry nasal passages, peeling or scaly skin, chapped lips, irritated skin, muscle tightness, a strange taste in the mouth and thirst. These side effects should lessen over time. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor or dermatologist. Some side effects can be serious. Tell your doctor or a medical professional right away if you have blisters, swelling, depression, chest pain, vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle or bone aches and pains, weakness, headaches, weight gain, fever, chills and vision problems.

What if I forget to take a dose of Acitretin?

If you forget to take a dose of acitretin, take the missed doses as soon as you remember it, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Never take a double dose of acitretin to try to catch up.

How do I store Acitretin?

Store acitretin pills away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. Keep them at a temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

What happens if I overdose on Acitretin?

 Signs of overdose on acitretin may include bone pain, dizziness and severe headache. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on acitretin call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If symptoms are severe, call 911. Overdose can be fatal. 

Warnings

Do not take acitretin if you plan to become pregnant within the next three years. Acitretin has also been found in sperm, and it can cause serious birth defects. This medication can cause you to be extra sensitive to light. Stay out of the sun when possible and wear sunscreen and protective clothing if you must go outside. Avoid sunlamps and UV light.
