Flonase Information:

What is Flonase?

Flonase is a nasal spray used to treat seasonal allergies as well as year-round allergies. This medication is a corticosteroid and it works by affecting cells and substances in the body, such as mast cells and histamines, which play a part in the body’s inflammatory response. By reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, allergy symptoms such as stuffy, runny, and itchy nose as well as sneezing are relieved. Flonase does not provide instant relief from symptoms but rather it begins to work over time when the medication is used on a regular basis.

How do I take Flonase?

Your doctor may prescribe one or two spays of Flonase to be taken once or twice a day. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Before using Flonase nasal spray, blow your nose thoroughly. Shake the bottle before each use, and then remove the cap from the nozzle. If you are using this bottle of Flonase for the first time, or you haven’t used your Flonase in over a week, you must prime the pump. To prime the Flonase pump, point the nozzle away from you and spray and press the pump about six times or until you see a fine mist spray out. When the pump is ready, hold one nostril closed with your finger and then partially insert the nozzle into your other nostril. Breathe in deeply through your nose as you spray your dose of Flonase into your nostril. Exhale through your mouth. Repeat if your doctor has prescribed more than one spray; then do the same in your other nostril

Before taking Flonase, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are allergic to any medications or any of the ingredients in Flonase nasal spray.
  • You have ever had tuberculosis.
  • You have ever had cataracts or glaucoma.
  • You have or suspect you might have an infection.
  • You have any kind of sores or irritation in your nose.
  • You have asthma.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially any kind of steroids, antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, antibiotics and medications for the heart or blood pressure.

What are the possible side effects of taking Flonase?

Common Flonase side effects include mild headache and back pain, minor nosebleeds, sinus pain, sore throat, minor cough, nausea, and irregular menstruation. If you experience major nosebleeds, have severe headaches, blurred vision, eye pain, wheezing, or sores in your mouth, nose or throat, contact your doctor at once. If you show signs of having an infection of any sort, (skin infection, STD, flu symptoms, diarrhea, etc.) contact your doctor because steroids like Flonase may affect your body’s ability to fight infections.

What if I forget to take a dose of Flonase?

If you forget to use a dose of Flonase nasal spray, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the forgotten dose and continue on your regular medication routine.

How do I store Flonase?

Store Flonase at a room temperature not exceeding 86 degrees Fahrenheit.  Do not allow it to freeze. Keep your medication out of reach of children.

What happens if I overdose on Flonase?

Overdose on Flonase is not likely considering volunteers in Flonase drug trials were given up to 4 mg of Flonase daily for 7 days with no ill effects. Some volunteers were also given 80mg daily for 10 days with adverse effects similar to regular side effects. The average adult daily dose is 200mcg, significantly less. If someone accidently ingests an entire bottle of Flonase, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Flonase, like other corticosteroids, may reduce your body’s ability to fight infections. It is imperative that you tell your doctor if you have or develop an infection while taking this medication. Also ask your doctor if you plan to get a live vaccine, such as a flu shot, while taking Flonase.
