Alocril Information:

What is Alocril?

Alocril, the ophthalmic drug nedocromil, is an anti-allergy solution prescribed to treating itching eyes caused by allergens. It is classified as a mast cell stabilizer (mast cells release substances into the body when someone comes in contact with an allergen) that works by stopping the release of those substances.

How do I take Alocril?

Alocril is a solution that is instilled into the eyes twice daily; usage continues until the end of allergy season, there is no longer any exposure to the allergen, or a doctor’s recommendation. Follow the instructions the accompanied the medication for information on how to instill the drops; if you have never used an ophthalmic solution before, ask your healthcare provider for a demonstration. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after using this medication.

Before taking Alocril, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to nedocromil or any of the ingredients in Alocril
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have any medical condition or are taking allergy medications
  • You wear contact lenses.

What are the possible side effects of taking Alocril?

Some people have reported side effects after using Alocril. Less severe symptoms include red, stinging, or burning eyes, blurred vision, or an increase in itching. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing).

What if I forget to take a dose of Alocril?

If you forget to instill your scheduled dose of Alocril, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase amount or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Alocril?

Keep Alocril tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired Alocril, or other drugs, according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Alocril?

Alocril is for topical application only; if it is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
