Amantadine Information:
What is amantadine?
Amantadine was once prescribed to treat or prevent flu viruses like influenza at the first signs of symptoms. However, it is no longer commonly prescribed for this in the US because all common modern flu viruses have shown resistance to amantadine. Amantadine medicine works by interfering with a virus’s ability to take over host cells and replicate. Amantadine seems to have a mild effect on Parkinson’s symptoms because it increases the release of dopamine.
How do I take amantadine?
Amantadine comes in the form of a capsule, tablet or oral solution. It is normally taken once per day, but one dose is normally two pills or four spoonfuls of oral solution. However, the dose may be split into two per day depending on the individual’s requirements. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Take this medication with a full glass of water.
Before taking amantadine, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.
- You have epilepsy or any type of seizures.
- You have ever had liver or kidney disease.
- You have heart disease or heart failure.
- You have low blood pressure.
- You have any type of mental illness.
- You have glaucoma.
- You have any type of recurring rash.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs or supplements, including antidepressants, stimulants, benzotropine or other medications for Parkinson’s disease, diuretics and medications used to treat smooth muscle spasms or any type of anticholinergics.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in amantadine medicine.
What are the possible side effects of taking amantadine?
Possible side effects from taking amantadine include dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, nervousness, upset stomach and trouble sleeping. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious but rare side effects that should be reported immediately include swollen feet or ankles, trouble urinating, splotchy skin, vision changes, shortness of breath, stiff muscles, twitching, fast heart rate, negative mood changes, seizures and unexplained sweating or fever.
What if I forget to take a dose of amantadine?
If you forget to take a dose of amantadine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule.
How do I store amantadine?
Amantadine should be stored in the childproof container it comes in at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on amantadine?
Signs of amantadine drug overdose may include anxiety, severe headache, hallucinations, fever, confusion, aggression, tremors, seizures, fainting, trouble breathing, trouble balancing and urinating less or not at all.
