Ambien Information:

What is Ambien?

Ambien (or zolpidem tartrate) is a central nervous system depressing sedative known as a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic and is an imidazopyridine class GABA A agonist. It is prescribed to treat insomnia in adults. Ambien slows the nervous system down, allowing you to fall asleep faster. Ambien CR is an extended release version of the drug which helps you stay asleep.

How do I take Ambien?

Take 1 Ambien pill by mouth nightly as needed. You should take your medication immediately before attempting to sleep, and you should only take your medication if you have at least 7 or 8 hours before needing to be awake. Do not crush, cut or chew your extended release tablets, as it will release too much medication at once. This medication may work faster if taken on an empty stomach.

Do not take more medication than is prescribed to you. Women are likely to be prescribed the 5mg (Ambien) or 6.25mg (Ambien CR) doses, and men the 10mg (Ambien) or 12.5mg (Ambien CR) doses. This is because the physiological rate of Ambien clearance is slower in women.

Our Ambien drug information is not intended for making decisions to take or prescribe Ambien. It is not a complete medical guide for this medication. For complete Ambien patient assistance, contact your doctor or pharmacist

Before taking Ambien, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a sleep disorder (e.g., sleep apnea, sleep walking) or are taking any medications for a sleeping disorder.
  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease.
  • You have or have a history of lung problems (e.g., asthma, COPD).
  • You have a history of addiction or substance abuse.
  • You are or have a history of mental or emotional problems or disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation) or are prescribed any medications to treat them (e.g., antidepressants, especially bupropion).
  • You have myasthenia gravis.
  • You have any medical allergies, especially to other sleep aids or sedatives.
  • You have a history of memory problems (e.g., amnesia).
  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, as this medication could potentially affect your child.
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, drugs, vitamins, or supplements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Ambien?

These include: swelling in the lips, tongue, throat; difficult or shallow breathing; performing activities while seemingly alert, but having no memory of them later; memory loss; depression or anxiety; abnormal thoughts or behavior (e.g., aggression, confusion, suicidal ideations); hallucinations.\

What if I forget to take a dose of Ambien?

Warnings

This medication can be habit forming. Keep your medication away from others and do not share your medication. If you feel you may be developing a dependence on this medication, speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

The rate of Ambien clearance can vary per person, so only take as much medication as is prescribed to you by your doctor. Do not take extra medication if your current prescription is not working before talking to your doctor. Ambien may remain in the blood stream even after waking. Be careful driving, operating machinery, or performing other potentially hazardous tasks before you know how you will react to your dosage. It may take up to 4 hours to be completely alert.

Some people may perform activities (e.g., driving, cooking) as though they are alert, but are asleep and will have no memory of them. If this happens to you, talk to your doctor immediately. Do not take this medication if you've been drinking alcohol before bed.

Do not suddenly stop taking this medication, as it will cause withdrawal symptoms. Discuss discontinuing this medication with your doctor.

Remember, this article is not a complete medication guide for Ambien. For full Ambien patient assistance, be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
