Avalide Information:
What is Avalide?
Avalide is a combination blood pressure medication that contains irbesartan (an angiotensin II receptor blocker or ARB) and hydrochlorothiazide (a diuretic). These medications have different mechanisms of action, reducing blood pressure in two different ways. Diuretics reduce blood volume, eliminated excess fluid from the body. This reduces strain on the heart and lowers blood pressure. Irbesartan blocks the effects of angiotensin II which is a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking this hormone, blood vessels relax and widen which also reduces blood pressure.
How do I take Avalide?
Avalide comes in the form of a tablet to be taken orally. The required dosage varies by patient. Your doctor will most likely start you on a lower dose and raise it over time until blood pressure control is reached. Avalide is normally taken once per day at the same time every day. It may be taken with or without food. It is best to take it earlier in the day to reduce the need to urinate throughout the night. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking Avalide, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Avalide pills.
- You have or have ever had gout.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have lupus.
- You are dehydrated or showing signs of dehydration.
- You regularly drink alcohol.
- You have diabetes or abnormal blood sugar levels.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, including potassium, diabetes medications, blood pressure medications, diuretics, steroids, lithium, NSAIDs, aspirin, muscle relaxers, narcotics and barbiturates.
What are the possible side effects of taking Avalide?
Possible Avalide drug side effects include dizziness, drowsiness and upset stomach. Tell your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or if they don’t go away over time. Serious but rare side effects that you should tell your doctor about immediately include dehydration, fast or abnormal heartbeat, confusion, muscle cramps, extreme thirst, decreased urination, eye pain, vision changes and fainting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Avalide?
If you forget to take an Avalide pill, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to try to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Avalide?
Store Avalide at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and protect it from light and moisture.
What happens if I overdose on Avalide?
Signs of Avalide drug overdose may include a slow heartbeat, feeling dizzy or light-headed and fainting. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Avalide, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not responding, call 911.
