Benazepril Information:
Benazepril hydrochloride tablets inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) in humans. This enzyme causes angiotensin I to become angiotensin II, which causes vasoconstriction. A decrease in vasopressor activity allows blood pressure to remain at controlled levels as its passage through the circulatory system is unhindered when vasoconstriction is limited. Patients with hypertension (high blood pressure) benefit from taking benazepril.
Benazepril comes in tablet form that is administered orally with or without food. Try to take benazepril at the same time every day. Drink plenty of fluids while taking benazepril or you may suffer from sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting, which can lead to lightheadedness or fainting. Benazepril can also be taken in a suspension. Ask your doctor for details on how to prepare a suspension.
Before taking benazepril, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicine
- You are taking an herbal preparation or dietary supplement
- You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- You have or have ever had liver or kidney problems
- You have an autoimmune disease
- You are dehydrated or are on a low-sodium die
- You are on dialysis
- You are scheduled to have surgery or to receive anesthesia
- You are receiving treatments to reduce sensitivity to bee or wasp stings
There are a few common side effects associated with use of benazepril, including cough, dizziness, and headache. Alert a physician immediately if you begin to feel chest pain, chills, lightheadedness, decreased urination, fainting, fever, hoarseness, irregular heartbeat, blistered, or peeling skin, swelling of the hands or feet, severe dizziness, shortness of breath, sore throat, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual stomach pain, or jaundice.
If you forget to take a dose of benazepril, take the dose you missed as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose of medicine, be sure to skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Never take two doses at once.
Store benazepril in a place that stays below 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep benazepril out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Symptoms of overdose may include fainting, severe dizziness, or lightheadedness. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or contact an emergency room immediately.
