Calcipotriene Information:
What is calcipotriene?
Calcipotriene is a synthetic, topical form of Vitamin D. In its ointment and cream form, it is used to treat plaque psoriasis, a skin condition that causes itchy, scaly patches of skin. The solution form is specifically used to treat psoriasis of the scalp. All forms work by slowing down the growth of skin cells.
How do I take calcipotriene?
Apply the calcipotriene ointment or cream to the affected skin areas only as often as your doctor has prescribed. Wash your hands, and clean and dry the affected areas before each application. If you are using the solution, apply the medication to only the areas of your scalp that are affected by psoriasis. Rub the solution in gently, and wash your hands as soon as you are done. If you have additional questions about how to use this medicine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Before taking calcipotriene, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication, or you have any other allergies
- You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially vitamin or mineral supplements
- You have high levels of calcium or vitamin D
- You are undergoing phototherapy
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking calcipotriene?
Calcipotriene sometimes causes mild irritation at the site of application. This may include itching, redness, burning, rashes, or dry or peeling skin. These mild side effects usually don’t require medical attention, but let your doctor know if you have any side effects that last a long time, or if the medication seems to be making your psoriasis worse. Stop using calcipotriene and tell your doctor right away if you experience any rare but serious side effects, including unusual tiredness or mood changes, constipation, stretch marks, folliculitis, muscle pain or weakness, or skin thinning and discoloration.
What if I forget to take a dose of calcipotriene?
If you forget a dose of calcipotriene, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for another application, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not use more of the ointment, cream, or solution than you normally would for a single application, as this may increase the risk of skin irritation.
How do I store calcipotriene?
Store all forms of calcipotriene at room temperature, in a dry space away from bright light. As with all prescription medications, keep calcipotriene out of reach of children and pets. Ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of any medication that has expired or that you no longer need.
What happens if I overdose on calcipotriene?
It is unlikely that you will overdose on calcipotriene when applying it to your skin, but the medication can be harmful when swallowed. If you or someone in your household has swallowed some of this drug, call your local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 right away.
Warnings
Avoid getting calcipotriene in your eyes, ears, nose, or vagina, and rinse with water immediately if you do get the medication in any of these areas. Do not use other topical medications or skin products on the treated areas unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. Calcipotriene can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible, and wear protective clothing or sunscreen when you do need to be outside. Avoid tanning beds.
