Campral Information:

What is Campral?

Campral is the drug acamprosate, a medication prescribed to help those trying to overcome an addiction to alcohol. It works by restoring balance in the brain of those chemicals that have been negatively affected by alcohol, and is used in conjunction with counseling and other forms of alcohol addiction therapy.

How do I take Campral?

Campral is administered as a delayed release tablet that is taken orally three times a day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or split it. If you have difficulty swallowing the medication, call your health care provider for Campral patient assistance.

Before taking Campral, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to acamprosate or any of the ingredients in the Campral medicine
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking antidepressants
  • You have abused prescription medications or have used street drugs
  • You have, or have had depression or you have contemplated suicide
  • You have, or have had, kidney disease.

What are the possible side effects of taking Campral?

Some people have reported side effects after taking their Campral medicine. Less severe symptoms include anxiety, diarrhea, sleep difficulties, dizziness, dry mouth, gas, itching, appetite loss, nausea, sweating, upset stomach, and weakness. If these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Campral patient assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), or tingling, burning, or numbness in the extremities.

What if I forget to take a dose of Campral?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Campral, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

Keep Campral tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
