Tranxene Information:

What is Tranxene?

Tranxene belongs to the benzodiazepines class of medications. Benzodiazepines enhance the effects of a natural chemical in the body and work on the brain and central nervous system, resulting in a calming feeling. For this reason, the Tranxene medicine is often used to treat anxiety disorders and seizures. It is also used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal.

How do I take Tranxene?

The Tranxene drug comes as a tablet that is typically taken one to three times a day, depending on the prescription. Follow the prescription instructions very closely, and talk to your pharmacist if you have any questions. Because this medication can be habit-forming, you should never take a larger dose or take it more times a day than prescribed.

Before taking Tranxene, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to the Tranxene drug or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, or glaucoma
  • You have a history of breathing problems, such as sleep apnea or COPD
  • You have a history of substance abuse and/or depression
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Tranxene?

Serious side effects from Tranxene are rare but can include slurred speech, difficulty with balance, change in sex drive, tremors, difficulty urinating, and sleep disturbances. Other potential side effects include headaches, fatigue, upset stomach, constipation, dry mouth, and blurred vision. Many patients take this medication without noticing any side effects; however, if you experience serious side effects, seek medical help immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tranxene?

If you miss a dose of your Tranxene medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for another dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue your usual dosing schedule. You should never double your dose to catch up.

How do I store Tranxene?

Tranxene should be stored in a tightly sealed, dry container at room temperature (59-86 degrees Fahrenheit). It should be kept out of reach of pets and children. If you no longer need this medication but are unsure how to properly dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Tranxene?

Overdosing on Tranxene may cause extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, slowed reflexes, and even loss of conscious. If you overdose on this medication, call your local poison control center by dialing 1-800-222-1222. If someone in your household has lost consciousness after overdosing on the Tranxene drug, call 911 immediately.

Warnings

Taking Tranxene can cause your mental health to change unexpectedly, and a small number of patients taking this medication have experienced suicidal thoughts as a result of the drug. If you experience suicidal thoughts, or other significant changes in your mental health including panic attacks, depression, agitation, mania, insomnia, or aggressive behavior, call your doctor.
